C., AUGUST 14, 1921—PART 2. The table was beautifully decorated with ferns and La France roses, and danc- ing followed. The guests were Miss ‘Taylor Chat of Society Folks Over the Teacups Turns to Clothes Interest in Paris Decree for Extending Dress Skirt “to the Ankle"—Some Charm- ind Summer Costumes. For the members of the smart set remaining on in town the discussion length of skirts as dictated by -he new Paris modes. Those just back from Europe comment on how strange the short skirts look to them, who have seen only long skirts in the for- eign fashion centers. It is a question whether American women will return to the more modest length, for Paris decrees “to the ankle while our modistes demand eight and a half inches from the ground. The charm of the summer costumes seen in Washington, the past week lies in thelr simplicity. Mme de Ces- pedes, wife of the minister of Cuba, was motoring on 16th street late Tuesday afternoon, with the minister, when she wore a very effective after- noon gown of white crepe de chine, both the bodice and skirt pleated and wide bands of black satin forming the only trimming. Her hat of burnt straw had a amart bow of black satin ribbon across the front of the up- turned brim, lending height at one side, and a large pink rose rested on the straight brim at the back. Mrs. Frederick E. Chapin, who was having tea under the trees at one of the suburban clubs a day or two ago, wore a black silk sweater of the popular Tuxedo model, with a sheer mull blouse beneath finished with col- lar and frills of baby Irish lace. Her strictly tailored skirt of white flan- nel was of moderate length and patch pockets formed its only trimming. White Sally sandals with touches of black carried out the color scheme, the only relief being in the hydrangea blue taffeta hat, covered with lac- quered flower petals in the same shade. The rather narrow brim turn- ed up in the front and added much to its becomingness. Mrs. T. Q. Donaldson, wife of Col. Donaldson, U. S. A who entertained at the supper dance at Wardman Park Hotel last week for her son, Mr. John O. Donalison of Texas, Wwore a charming summer evening gown of embroidered Philippine cloth, | ;" wiil go to Detroit, Mich., to be the very sheer and of a soft cream color. The bodice was made surplice with a V decnllete, and tke skirt, which was elaborately draped at one side, had = further trimming of narrow | ruffies. The girdle of white satin moire ribbon was tied at the back in a loose knot, with the ends falling. Mrs. George D. Hope, who was a guest at the supper party, wore a French gown of white mull and lace, with a pointed overdress, the skirt adorned with row upon row of lace and embroidery. . A girdle of white satin with a wide bow and long sash ends made an effective finish. With this costume she wore a rose pink picture hat trimmed with ostrich plumes of the same shade. Miss Katherine Sutherland, daugh- ter of Senator and Mrs. Howard Sutherland, was taking her dally constitutional on Connecticut avenue one afternoon last week. prior to her departure for Deer Park, when she wore a distinctive sport costume consisting of a nile green silk slip-on sweater with white collar and cuffs, worn with a white silk crepe skirt. Her leghorn hat had a rather wide brim with a scarf of green silk en- |fl|rcl|ng the crown, and she wore green hose and white oxfords Mrs. Fraser Edwards was in a party on one of the hotel roofs one even- ing last week, when she wore a rose crepe gown made on straight lines with shirred pockets on each hip and a belt of narrow white leather, ac- centing the deep waistline. The rounded neck line was outlined with narrow baby Irish lace, which also formed the cuffs on the short sleeves. Her hat of black Canton crepe had of black Chantilly falling from the upturned brim.
