RALDINE FARRAR LL FIGHT CHARGE Mystery Surrounds Telle- gen’s Suit, But He Is Called Too Domesticated. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 6.—Little of the mystery surrounding the real reasons for the serving of papers on Geraldine Farrar, the Metropolitan Opera House diva, In a suit for separation brought by her actor-husband, Lou Tellegen, was cleared up today, owing to the secrecy which attended the whereabouts of the ‘well known pair. At. Mme. Farrar's residence, 20 West T4th street, a servant who answered the r bell was instructed to say that her mistress was out of the city. No fur- ther information could be obtained de- spite persistent inquiries. Tellegen was equally reticent and re- fn to see any' callers or answer the telephone in his room at the Ritz-Carl- ton, where he registered Friday night. He left the hotel with his secretary after luncheon and had not returned up to a late hour this evening. Refused to Accept Summons. At the office of Harry N. Steinfeld, 140 Test 42nd street, his representative said that Misg_Farrar would not accept the summons Thursday night, when she was approached by the process server in front of her home. She was accompanied by her parents and a woman friend. When the paper was thrust into hel hand she said, “I refuse to accept it and her mother accepted it for her. The suit will be brought on the grounds of desertion, the attorney is reported to have said, although there will be sev- eral other interesting grounds named in the complaint which will be filed in West Chester county on the day of the trial This is the reason, Mr. Steinfeld say: the papers have not been flled as ye Alvin Untermeyer, who is representing Mrs. Tellegen, could not be located to- day, it be!n: said at his office, 120 Broad- ‘way, that he had gone to Saranac Lake. He refused to divulge the address of his client before his departure from the city. Preyed on Wife's Nerves. Gossip along the Rialto has it that Tellegen and the grand opera star, who were married in 1916, have not been getting along together for sev- eral months. He is said to have been 80 domesticated that it preyed on his Wwifg's nerves, and that his recent trip to West End, N. J. ostensibly on a fishing trip, was in reality an en- forced vacation. No confirmation could be obtained of this report, owing to the refusal of both parties to make public their contentions. That he forestalled her in bringing court proceedings is evident by the indignation of her attorney, Mr. Un- termeyer, who challenges the motives of the matinee idol in starting action against his client. Tellegen was re- quested to call at the office of his wife's attorney in order to discuss the breach between them, and in the meantime was forbidden by her law- yer to attempt to see her or to enter the house. Asks te Get Clothes. The actor disregarded these ad- monitions, as was evidenced by his visit to his home and his chagrin at finding a new lock had been installed on the front door. and that his re- ‘peated rings for a servant went unan- swered, although the movement of a curtain at one of the windows showed the house was tenanted. Mr. Untermeyer stated that Mrs. Tellegen will bring a counter suit perfectly good reasons.” He de- u'l]led to mention the grounds in de- Tellegen today requested Mr. Unter- meyer to open the Tellegen home to him so he could get his clothing and other personal belongings.
