Death was evidently painless, for the suicide had removed his clothing and was lying in bed as though he had just retired. Not even the bed clothing was disordered. It is naturally supposed that he intended to Kill himself with the laudanum, and, in case that failed, he supposed the gas would finish the work. In the Philadelphia city council's investiga- tion of ex-City Treasurer Bardsley’s methods yesterday Granville B. Haines, a director in the Keystone Bank, testified that there had been an overissue of stock amounting to 1,200 shares when the late John Lucas was president. Coun- cilman Etting offered a resolution that Pre dent Harrison be asked to investigate the con- duct of the Treasury Department in connection with the Keystone Bank. Mr. Etting made a most vigorous speech in defense of his motion. He said: “Through no skill or energy on the part of the United States officials the Treasury Department became aware of the Keystone rottenness, yet for ninety days thereafter the bunk was allowed to remain open and the city and citizens of Phila- delpbia were invited to deposit their money. It matters not whether the assets now are more or less. Some people who had every oppor. tunity to know the story of the rotten bank had every chance to ‘get out,’ while other peo- ple who could not know the story had ever} chance to ‘get in.’ It is the most extraordi- nary action on the part of the general gov- ernment that I ever heard of. Even if our city treasurer had been honest he might, for all that was done by the United States authorities, have continued to deposit, for no notice, no inquiry, no warning came to put bim on guard or any other city official on guard. The salary of Marsh was even con- tinued at the bank and every appearance was held out that the bani was sound during all this time; that the general goverument know, by confession, of its rottenness. It is time we should make a move to right the city’s wrongs and impress upon the authorities at Washing- ton that there must be some very active as- surauces of a remedy for these abuses of power on the part of the general government.” One other member of the committee voted with Mr. Etting and four against him, so the matter was dropped for the present. The gen- eral impression, however, is that it will be re- viewed shortly. 200 Arrest of a Young Widow.
