B. ——— THE SUSPENDED CLERGYMEN. They Deny That They Have Been Guilty of Showing Contempt. In response to the charge that they had shown contempt in preaching since their sus- pension Revs. A. W. McClurkin, O. B. Mulligan, Hugh W. Reed, W. L. C. Sampson, E. M. Mil- ligan and J. R. J. Milligan appeared before the Reformed Presbyterian synod yesterday in Pittsburg in the order named. They all denied that they had been in contempt. ,They had not preached in Reformed Presbyterian churches, but had spoken from the pulpits of other denominations. They did not do this out of contempt for the Pittsburg presbytery. Rev. O. B. Milligan touched every heart when he said he had not preached from his own pulpit, but had prayed with the sick, comforted the dying and buried the dead of his own con- gregation. is formality gone through with the synod now proceeded to the trial, or rather considera tion of the appeals from the action of the Pitts- burg synod. Rev. A. W. McClurkin was first to be arraigned. He plead eloquently in his own defense for half an hour. Heclaimed that procedure against him was irregular and testimony against him fulse. ‘Let me be condemned,” he concluded, im- pressively, “if I must, for my own statements, and not for those of other men. 1 may be guilty of horesy, blasphemy, derisive courses and all other crimes, but that does not justif, you in condemning me on false statements an Without substantiated testimony. It may be better that one should perish than that the whole church should be sacrificed, but the: should be justice. 1am on trial without there being a single witness against me, without a statement of my own being used against me, and without an accuser.” In view of the peculiar circumstances of Mr. McClurkin’s case the synod decided to try him separately. PRACTICALLY PASSED. the the Present Status of the Bering Sea Bill—The Next Step. It is learned here, from competent authority in matters of parliamentary practice, that the status of the Bering sea exclusion bill in the British parliament is similar to that of a bill which has undergone successfully all of the crucial tests of party division in our Congress, and simply remains to be acted upon formally. ‘The vote on the second reading in the com- mons is commonly regarded as the final test vote. The bill now goes to the house of lords, which never attempts to thwart the will of the commons except in rare cases of unusual inter- est to the aristocrat party. So the bill may be regarded as practically passed, and, indced, it is the practice of the British government, when a measure has reached this stage, to immediately prepare to give effect to its provisions if there is need for its speedy application,as is admitted on both sides is now the case. ‘The next step in the negotiations is likely to be an overture to the Russian government to co-operate with the governments of the United States and Great Britain in enforcing a close se Bering sea, and there is a belief by both of the principals that np substantial diffi culty will be encountered in securing Russia’s adhesion to the agreement. Secretary Foster yesterday afternoon issued a circular calling in the 434 per cent bonds of July 14, 1870, and January 20, 1871, and fixing September 2, 1891, as the day of payment. The circular, the issue of which was foreshadowed in yesterday's Stan, is as follows: By virtue of the authority conferred by law upon the Secretary of the Treasury notice is hereby given that the principal and accrued in- terest of such of the 4}¢ per cent bonds issued under the acts of July 14, 1870, and January 20, 1871, as may be outstanding on the 2d day of September, 1891, will be puid at the treasury of the United States, in the city of Washington, D.C., on that day, and that the interest of said bonds will then cease. ‘Suggestions have been made on the part of the holders of some of these bonds of a desire to extend the payment thereof, at the option of the United States, at the rate of 1 or 13g per cent per annum, and the Secretary of the ‘Treasury will hereafter consider whether the acceptance of such offers, or any of them, will be profitable to the government, and in that event reserves the right to except such bonds for this call. — W2 ‘TED AGENTS—MALE OR FEMALE—NEW 2c. housenoid articie; profit, 300 per cent and instructions, 1Ucents; yuods of ‘commission, AYNER & CO., brovidence, Bel, 1uyli-iu W ANTEDISIENOGHAPHERS AND.
