Loxpox, June $.—It was quite evident this morning when the old and thé y@@ng ladies, the fat and the lean ladies, the tall and the short Indies, but the invariably woll-iressed ladies took their places in the gallery of 4a Chiet Justice Coleridge's court that the con- clusion of the prosecution in the baccarat case without anything more than the gaming scandal having been developed. was, if gratify: ing, somewhat unexpected. However, the de- fense was still to be heard and great things might yet transpire. So the fair creatures were not denied the prospect of being eventually very properly shocked. TRE PRINCE cRITICIER Among the «mall groups of men of fashion who loitered about the neighborhood before the opening of the day # proceedings there was an apparent concensus of opinion that the Prince of Wales had not shown anything of the good sense so insistently claimed for him by his admirers when be went kick parently falling max this when t unne r the court © re not to be longer accounted one of Sir William Gordon Camming’s friends goes withoutsaying. OPENING FOR THE DE Sir Charles Russell, counsel-in-ch: defendants, then arose and proceeded to make | the opening addres: to the jury on behalf of | his clients, The distinguished Jurist stood | with his right band resting easily on the table by his side. In his left hand he held a piece of per, which he presently cast aside, and, ae event, to bring disgrace or bh some; his eyes moved slowly and thoughtfully from one to the other of the jurors. Occasionally he turned his face fully, grace- and naiurally toward that of the lord ful jel but only to resume his direct ress to the jury. Sir Charles suid that his ts were not there in the character of pe sons desiring to be persecutors or willing to be persecuted. They had been forced, in self- defense, to the course which they had adopted, Yhere was no better evidence of the trath of | this fact than was to be fouud in the urtdisputed | admixsion of the plaintiff in this case, Sir Wil- liam Gordon Cumming, that thore persons, his | (Sir Charles Russell +) clients, were acting most conscientiously in this unhappy affair. With scathing incisiveness Sir eee the plaintiff for hu ne signed the humiliating and ineul ument which had been submitted to him by gentle- men who were in everything his peers af Tranby Croft in September last. Why did his tardy honor sting until the plaintiff bad found himself in the miast of othcr embarrassing circumstances? TESTIMONY FOR THE DEFENSE. Continuing, Mr. Arthur Wilson said that he saw the same thing repeated by Sir William Gordon Cumming the sume evening, and that he then told Mr. Berkeley Lovett that the baronet was cheating at cards. When he (Ar, Wilson) informed Mr. Levett of what he had observed in Sir William's play Mr. Levapt suid that it was “impossible,” that he (the witness) must be mistaken.
