In the seven- teenth year of his age he was baptized into fellowship of the New Hope Baptist Church by Rev. James Leftwich, At this time he was en- gaged in farming and \y then regarded it as his life work. Soon after ho joined the chureh he en- gaged actively in Sun- day school and church work. He commenced his studies preparatory for his newly chosen calling at the Botetourt Springs, in Roanoke county, Va. Remaining their fifteen months he returned to his native county and taught school one year, frequently preaching and con- ducting ope meetings in destitute neighbor- hoods.
