A Delightful Entertainment at the Beae- tiful Home of Mr. and Mrs. Gurley. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gurley opened their beautiful new home on 16th street last ovening for the first time for a large entertainment. The occasion was a reception tothe Young Men's Christian Association, of which Mr. Gur- ley is president Over a thousand invitations had been issued and a majority of them were evidently accepted, for the spacious halis and drawing rooms of the honse were filled for over three hours, The house was decorated with a profusion of smilax, roses, chreanthe- mums and other blossoms, while all the win- dows and recesses were banked with palma A large orchesira stationed in the hall of the second floor played sweet music all the evening and added greatly to the pleasure of the enter- tainment. The guests as they came im were re- ceived in the haliway by a committee from the association composed of Mesara. Burrill, Slo- cum, Paul, Kerr, Coons, Harding, Reisel, Roth- rock, Fay, Spangler, Powell and Reed. THE RECEIVING PaRTT, who stood in the reception room to the right of the entrance, consisted of Mr. and Mra W. B Gurley, Mrs. S. W. Woodward and Mra. B. HL Warner. Mr. 8 W. Woodward introduced the guests asthey entered, and Mr. Charles L. Garley, assisted by Mr. BH. Warner and Seo- retary Pugh of the ¥.M.C.A.. were ani in their efforts for their comfort and pleasure, Allthe rooms on the first and second floors were thrown open and the beauty and size of the house came in for « large amount edmira- thon. In the big diming room a fine collation of sulads, oysters, croquettes, ices and confec- tions was spread and a corps of skilled waiters <a that every wish of the guests was attended SOME PLEASANT FEATURES OF THE RECEPTION. The entertainment was in every way a de- lightful success and no one enjoyed it more than the younger men and boys, a large num- ber of whom were present, and who were made to feel that on this occasion they were the hon- ored guests of the evening. There were men of all ages present, but the hospitality of the house was so cordial and lavish that every one Wax made to feel at ease and welcome. The older members of the association took great in- terest in an old leather-covered book that ®2* on exhibition in one of the drawing reome, ‘The book was filled with the manuscript records of the secretaries from 1851 to 1862, and con- tained the names of the eighty-four men who signed the first constitution of the Washi ¥.M.C. The assault occurred in a lawyer's office while testimony was being taken in the Seamon divorce case, Makall was giving evidence in the case and Mr. Giassie was conducting the crose-examination. He was pressing the witness pretty closely and compli- ments were exchanged. Daily and a squad of fourth precinct policemen interrupted a game of ‘‘5-cent seven Sunday evening at a cook shop kept on Virginia avenue southwest by Robert and Jéar- don Johuson. Money, chips and cards were securod as evidence and the two brothers were ‘etivne kitow,” aula the Judge, *ut when 0 raised achair and proceeded to let it come down on Makall’s head, but the latter threw up his hands and warded off the blow. Judge Miller asked Makall if he expected anything else than a blow, but the witness hardly knew how to answer the question. Mr. Glassic made his statement, which was substantially the samo as told by the other wit- nessee, only he added that Mr. Makall made an advance movement. Judge Miller said that the use of the epithet was calculated to cause trouble. *D— liar,” the judge said, is not “mere words” as the law contemplates. When he says that in a public place he knows it means fight, The only trouble in this case is that Mr. Giassie resorted to artificial means and not to nature's weapons, “It is the merest technical assault,” concluded the court, “and Mr. Glassie is fined @1.” — Cattle Market.
