Mr. Hoffman thereupon gave bail for his ap- pearance at court in tue sum of $3,000. ——_-—___ Crimsal Court, Judge Fisher.—Yesterday, Mary Richardson, indicied for the lareeny of & watch, was found not guilty. Smithers for defense. After the rendition of the verdict she informed Judge Fisher that she had paid Mr. ©. S. Baker twenty doilarsas a retaining fee: that he procured bail for her, and she was re- Jeased a poe poe that subsequently she was re- arrested and again cemmitted to jail The Judge directed the following order to be Made: Inthe caseof Mary Richardson, the defendant, having stated on the trial of this cxase that 0.S. Baker had been employed as ber attorney, and that she had paid him the sum of twenty dollars as a retaining fee, it is ordered that a rule be laid upon the said Baker toappear on Saturday next and show cause why the money so paid should not be brenght inte Court to be refunded to the de- tendant. Mr. Baker at this time entered the Court and asked that be might proceed to show cause which was granted, wien he s'ated that it was true that be had received the money named. but it was paid him in consideration of pro- curing bail for her; that both she and her lover bad frequently promised to pay him to defend her, but bad fatied, and not having been paid therefore he did not consider it his daty to take further action in the case. The Court thereupon stated that it was un- Professiona: for attorneys to be enguged in procuring bail, and continued the order above as follows :—+ Mr. Baker being in court, asked that be might now show cause, which request was granted: whereupon it appearing to the Court that the said O.S. S.
