FENIAN TRIALS Conviction and Sentence of John Stevens. ‘The trial of the Fentan prisoners at Teronto Was proceedea with yesterday morning, and the usual crowd was in attendance. R. Mc- Kensie and J. Fleming appeared for the Amer- ican Goverment. Mr. Thurston, the American Consul, was in attendance, looking atter the interests of the prisoners, as he has been con- stantly since the beginning of the Fenian trials. Jobn Stevens was placed on trial. The pri- Soner was very deaf, and was allowed ta come within the enclosure. He bad nospecial coun- selreiained. John Starkwell was sworn, and testified that he saw the prisoner at Fort Erie carrying a rifle, and being very deaf, and not knowing the watchword, he was afraid of betng shot by the Fenian pickets. He left them and returned to Fort Erie. Several others tes- Ufled that they saw the prisoner armed with a rifle. Jobn Huga@es said he and the prisoner came to Buffalo seeking work, and they were engaged to go to Fort Erie to work on the Erie and Niagara railway, and were taken prison- ers by the Fenians James Smith was sworn, And testified that he keepsa tavern at Fort Erie, amd the prisoner stopped at the tavern on May 3ist, and the next morning the Fenians surrounded the house. Mr. McKenzie then addressed the jury; Hon. J. M. Cameron re- plied in behalf Of the Crown. The judge hay- ing summed up the case, the jury retired, and, ‘atter a short absence, returned a verdict of guilty. The prisoner was then senterced to be bung on the 13th of December. Dry Goods The election bas interfered with trade ma- terially, and rendered it quite dal; but a re- Vival is now apticipated. (roods bave serious- ly accumulated on hand unsold both in the interior and home markets, and prices are gen- erally weak. Brown shirtings and sheetings are very unsettled in price, even after a decline of 1 cent. The supply is on the increase. Bleached goods are also less brisk. The best grades alone are steady. Inferior are too abundant for steadiness. Heavy drills are in demand, and firm. Canton flannelenre steady. Stripes are doil. Tic are also in slight de- mand. Prints are very ipactive. Desirable styles are scarce and firm. All others are Ginghams are dul). Delaines are the st brisk. desirable styles are in too small supply for the demand. Prices are very firm. The tine grades alone are wanted. Fancy cassimeres are dull, except for the few desirable styles. Prices of all others are neminal, Satinets are in moderate de- mand. Tweeds are dull. Financiat.—The New York money market continues easy at five per cent. for demand loans on stock collaterals, and four per cent. on Goyernments. . There is less demand trom stock brokers; but the requirements for dis- counts we beavier. The Commercial of yesterday says:—Gold continues quiet, and is, upon the whole, weak. There is lese speculation than usual. Importers appear to have discovered that their eystem of ‘short” sales is of no ad- ‘ventage to them, and really helps to keep the premium higber than if left to its natural course.
