THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Cirenlation im the District, W. D. WALLACH, Editor and Prepricter. WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY.. | =x } SRY F | “SPREADING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. Im repablishing, on Tuesday fast, a letter said to have been received by Mr. Romero in this city, giving intelligence of Maximilian’s | abdication and departure from the Mexican | Capital to Vera Cruz, we pointed ont the con- tradictory character of the statements, but ex- pressed our belief in their general correctness. We reasoned on thej probabilities im the case without reference to the usually unreliable tare of Mexican news coming through the le- gation here. The New York Commercial of yesterday af- terneon says: lement. published by Mr. Komero, as “official,” of the abdication of Maximilian, ss entirely unfounded. The dispatch sent by Mr.Ssulmer acting as agent of the United States at Vera Cruz, originated in a visit paid | by the Emperor to Orizaba. Onur information is from an eyewitness of the condition of things im Mexico, just arrived here by the steamer Mapbattan.” Ov the other hand. « correspondent of the World, writing from the steamer Manhattan, says be left che City of Mexico on the 22d ult., and Vera Cruz on the %th. He adds “On Sunday, October 21, the Emperor started trom Mexico for Orizaba, whither he went professedly for bis health, and to enable him to receive news from the Empress more fre- quently and quickly. But it is generally understood that although the journey may have been undertaken originally tor these purposes, it will result im bis reaching the coast and em- barking for Eorope. The sad news of the Empress’s caiamity bas completely pro-trated bim. He bas been prevented from leaving Mexico vefore oaly by Cariotta’s wish and des termmaction that they should remain.” These discrepancies. as we have already Starved, are characteristic of Mexican intelli- gence, and we must trust to time to reconcile them and briug out the truth. THE BXPECTED METEOBIU SHOWER. We have already alluded to the meteoric display which occurs at intervals of tlurty- three years, and which sayans tell us may be expected some time on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday next. The phenomenon may oc- cur in the day time, and therefore be m visible— & probability which seems to have been over- looked by enthusiastic writers on the subject, it generally takes place however, between midnight and dawn, and if that should ve the case this year, few are likely to witness the ex- bibition, except that too numerous portton of the community who don’t go home till morn- img. For the benefit of that respectable ciass of citizens who go to bed at a reasonable nour, ‘we suggest that due notice be given of the com- mencement of the exbibition by the ringing ot bells. By giving proper notice of such an ar- Tangement beforehand, no unnecessary alarm would be created. Not Satisriz> with tHe Resvit.—mMr. J. J. CHARGE OF FaLsx PRETENSES.—This morn- ing, James Columbus Seitz was before Justice Hollingshead, at Police Headquarters, to an- swer & warrant served by detectives Clarvoe and McDevitt, issued on the oath of Mr. John T. Mitchell, charging bim with obtaining with- in the past six weeks a quent of goods, valued at about $150, by false pretenses, from tne tirm of Harper & Mitchell. Mr. Phillips x the prosecution, and Dir. Norris for the se. Mfr, Mitchell testified that Seitz purchased a qa ity of handkerchiefs, saying that his Tf would see that they were paid for. He represented that he hada claim, and promised from day to day as he made purchases. He finally asked the amount of bis bill, and was answered thatit was about $1), and he prom- ised to pay the next duy. but failed to so. Subsequently he applied for more credit, and was retused. He showed witness a letter, and Stated that Col. Lorg gotng with him tothe ay master's office to obtain the money on claim Phe letter purperted to be from Col. Long, (the President's private secretary.) He pleaded to be credited for a new silk dress, and upon the representations made by him with tue letter, witness consented for it-to be cut off and de- livered toSeftx. Next rning he found that a Iace-covered paresot ued at $25 had been charged on the book against the defendant, ae no record @! iv as the defendant said he had. He aiso called on Col. Long and as- certained that he hed not written the Lome ferred to. He witness that the claim was fer 1,600 for traveling Sxpempes, having been in the army, from which he was discharged on the plains. He represented that the claim had been allowed. and he would get the money shortly. He stated that he wished the dress to give to hi jeter. Witness first refused to give him the dress, and the accnsed resented the letter purporting to be from Vol. ng, from which it appeared the claim re- ferred to wasa tly reliable one. It was on the strength of the letter that he gave him credit for the dress. On cross-examination, witness said the ac- count was about $160, and it was made during the month of October. Witness allowed him credit witbout ap; fetter, betas, shown at first. ‘Witness, on examining the warrant, said wasa mistake about it, as he -had not claimed that he obtained the bought previous to the silk dress on pretences. Sixty-one dollars worth he considered were obtained by false pretences. Witness had not been offered the amount of hisaccount. The letter shown him was written in iak; be might be mistaken to the contents. It was “Ool.
