GRANDEUR OF QUEEN OF SHEBY SHOWN I GREAT DESERT SCENES | ‘The crandeur and tmmensity of the scale on which “Queen of Sheba” which will be at the America theater starting Tuesday, was produced, um der the direction of J. Gordan Bd- wards, is shown in those scenes of the picture taken on the desert. ‘These involve the trip of Sheba across the Arabian desert on her first visit to the great wise man of the east, King| Solomon; later the crossing of Sheba and her army sving to the aid of Solomon, besieged by Adonijah in the Tover of David; and finally the| Queen and her ttle son returning to her kingdom after the child's visit to Solomon and his great’ adventures at the court of the king. Like the moving of an army, Ike the moving of @ great caravan over the desert, was the preparation for the making of these scenes, The sand, @unes on which they were filmed are at Oxnard, 65 miles from the Willam Fox west coast studios. To this point there had to be transported 600 per sons, 300 horses, 14 camels, 31 char iots, some 150 tents including Arabian tents, wardrobe and dressing room tents and sleeping tents for about 300 persons, Besides these were two “chuck” wagons, accompanied by a chef and a staff of assistants; 40 ward- robe boxes beside special wardrobe for principals; four water wagons and 18 motor trucks for the transportation of these things from the train over the five miles to location. Like a lt tle city was this complete equipment when spread and set in action for the making of the picture. For the accommodation-of thts mov- ing army thero were chartered two trains to carry the people and the equtyment between Los Angeles and Oxnard—one train of 12 cars for the freight: and animals, and a second train’ of six cars to carry the actors. Mr. Edwards and his cipais, and the camera-| men went by automobile over the mountain roads. The picturesquely clad mounted Arabians, followers of the Queen and} her fighting men, were all picked trained riders, many of them west- ern cowboys, who give the greatest zest to the dramatic dash of Sheba's army racing across the sands of the desert when, at the command of the Queen, they rushed to the aid of| Solomon besieged by Adonijah. Not the least thrill of this scene was the presence of Sheba herself, clad in her picturesque suit of armor, riding in her chariot and urging the Griver of her four Arabian horses for-| ward to the rescue of the king. She! was accompanied by her troops of| charioteers, thirty in all, with each of the gay oriental chariots drawn by four horses. AnA in the desert is one of the striking features of the episode that presents Sheba’s first trip over the desert. Mounted high on the back of a camel, followed by her men at arms, char foteers, and Nubian slaves on foot, she makes camp in a group of palm trees, wher re pitched 35 Arabian tents, guarded by Arabians in plo turesque fiowing robes of stripped stuff. ——q9.]71.—__ The Duke of York, second son of King George, has an official alow. ance of fifty thousand dollars a year.
