NEW BUICK’S WHEELBASE IS LONGER, BODIES ARE LARGER Walve-in-Head Straight Eight ‘Engine Mounted at Five Points in Rubber ‘The series of new Buicks are Songer, wider and more roomy. New sweeping wind streamlines and inte- rior appointments characterize all models. More than four inches have een added to the wheelbase of the 50 series, bringing it to 119 inches. ‘The 60 series has been increased from 118 to 127 inches, the 80 series from 126 to 130 inches and the 90 series from 134 to 138 inches. Front treads have been widened from 57 inches to &9 inches, and rear from 59 to 60% inches, resulting in greater roominess and improved stability. The long, low flowing lines accentuate the in- crease in length. Buicks will be exhibited at the Bis- marck automobile show by Fleck Mo- tor Sales, Inc. A chromium finished V-shaped lower and broader radiator grill, fenders, longer hoods and symmetri- cally flowing lines mark the front view. The backward slope of the ‘windshield, curved roof lines, fender valances and running boards forming ® continuous line, larger doors closing flush with the running board aii tend to emphasize the lowered bodies. In the rear of the bodies curved sheet metal forms a continuous line irom roof to below the frame. The spare tire is equipped with a full metal cover finished in body colors. Attached to the rear bumper is a gravel deflector. The addition of a second oil ring plus the usual two pressure rings on the pistons is said to reduce oil consumption and add to engine life. To eliminate the long “breaking-in” period, the pistons are jelectro-plated with bearing metal. Automatic devices are designed to make control and operation of the car as perfect as possible without jattention from the driver. The wheels |¢limination of the foot starter pedal he steel is replaced by a push button at the left side of the dash. A touch of the finger automatically engages the starting gears by electro-magnetic attraction and turns the motor. The automatic carburetor heat control replaces the former manual- jOperated device. This maintains the gas mixture at proper temperature for best performance under all driv- ig conditions. Radiator shutters are | eliminated and the water temperature jis controlled by a thermostatic by- pass that cuts the water off from the |radiator and circulates it through the engine until the proper operating temperature is reached. | Clutch Action Softer Another improvement of the auto- matic clutch and syncromesh trans- mission is a pendulum valve control that softens the clutch engagement through the action of car accelera- j tion. It will be shown by Fleck Motor Sales, Inc. at the Bismarck auto {show. The seven new bodies created for Pontiac by Fisher are fitted with the Fisher no-draft vertilation to clim- inate direct drafts and to prevent clouding of windows. The car has a wheel-base of 115 inches and the four-door sedan weighs 3,265 pounds. The other bodies include the standard two- door sedan, standard coupe, five Hy touring sedan coupe and roadster. Wheel tread, both front and rear, is nearly five feet in width. Full balloon tires, 5:50 inch, are mounted on 17-inch wire wheels. Six wheel sets are available on all models at extra cost. All the instruments are grouped at the left of the dash in a half-oval panel; they include a large AC pointer speedometer, fuel gauge, ammeter and combination oil pressure and temperature gauge. Di- als carrying white figures on black for high visibility are indirectly lighted. The starter is operated by a button at the left of the instrument panel. New improvements include flexible springs of chrome vanadium steel, permanently lubricated and covered, Lovejoy hydraulic shock absorbers, and rubber cushioning at thirty- | = : ee Shee, cars in the lowest priced field. Wa- ter passages completely separate the. cylinder barrels down to a point be- low the limit of piston travel. At a road speed of only twenty-five miles per hour the pump circulates twenty gallons of water per minute. The cooling system retains Pontiac’s cross-flow radiator. The radiator has an all-copper core of new design. Mechanical Pump A mechanical AC pump draws the fuel from an 18-gallon tank concealed at the rear. The gasoline is filtered and then metered through a triple venturi downdraft carburetor with an “economy” range up to sixty-five miles per hour. A pneumatic accel- erating pump enriches the vapor mix- ture for the period of several seconds, to provide for fast pick-up. the A seven points throughout the car which separates the rear axle from the springs, the springs from the frame and the frame from the body. The Tubber insulation absorbs road shock and aids also in preserving silence of operation. The big motor block is cushion-mounted on five heavy pads of permanent rubber compound. High Compression Many mechanical advancements distinguish the new straight eight motor. For one thing, it has an al- most “square” ratio of bore to stroke 33/16 inches by 3% inches, calling for extremely short piston travel. The tnotor has a cylinder displacement of 223.4 cubic inches. The patented contours of Pontiac’s GMR cylinder head permit the use of regular grades, of gasoline at a compression of 128 pounds to the square inch. Connect- ing rods and the electro-plated pis- tons, which carry three compression rings and an oil ring, are balanced in production to pius or minus limits of one-half the weight of a copper penny. ‘The cooling system includes a cool convertible coupe with rumble seat, five-passenger sedan and four-door, five-passenger convertible phaeton. B. Gilman com- pany, local distributor. Almost two years ago when the first Floating Power Plymouth car was introduced, it brought to buyers in this price field new features. Among these were, of course, Floating Power motor mountings, the first fundamental improvement in motor cars since the closed body. Equally important was the full-size, roomy and comfortable body with smart, racy lines. Free wheeling, double drop frame and easy-shift silent sec- ond transmission were just a few of the features which the first Floating Power Plymouth introduced to low priced cars. Just as this car set the pace— which was followed in swifter fashion by the new, finer Plymouth of 1932— so is the new Plymouth Six outstand- ing among 1933 low priced motor cars. Entirely new from bumper to bumper and from top to tires, the new Six has deep sloping radiator; wide front and rear fenders con- structed to conceal the chassis; a similarly concealed gasoline tank and sloping hood louvres out the lines of windshield and radiator. Four body styles are being dis- played. They include: business coupe, rumble seat coupe, four-door sedan, and convertible coupe. Has 70 Horsepower The new Plymouth Six offers for the first time, a six-cylinder Floating Power engine in the lowest price field. ‘The new engine is mounted in rubber in two points and has a bore of 3% inches and a stroke of 4% inches with total displacement of 189.8 cubic inches, developing 70 brake horse- Powe! r at 3,600 revolutions per min- ute. A downdraft carburetor of Chrysler Motors’ design is largely responsible for the very favorable ratio between power output and piston displace- taent as well as the fuel economy. ‘The latest perfected type combina- tion air cleaner and intake silencer assures further perfection of engine Performance. An automatic thermal Control has been built into the mani- |” fold. Fuel is supplied to the carburetor by a diaphragm type fuel pump. An even fuel pressure, regardless of throttle opening, is maintained by an air dome on the fuel Pump. Intake valves are of chrome nickel steel and exhaust valves of heat re- sisting silchrome. To overcome the destructive heat of the exhaust flame, special exhaust valve seats of a tungsten-chrome alloy have been in- serted in the cylinder block. Particular care has been exercised in grinding the camshaft. Spray from metered holes and from the ends of the connecting rods thoroughly lubri- cates the cylinder walls, pistons, pins and valve mechanism, Harmful gases, the natural product of combustion, are removed by a stream of fresh, clean air which en- ters at the oil filler pipe and is drawn through the outlet pipe on the right rear side of the block. The floating Power engine mount- ings differ slightly in design but not in principle. Two-point suspension with the front mounting raised to balance the weight of the power plant is continued in the new Plymouth Six. The rear mounting is located in the same relation to the front mounting as heretofore. The torque spring, however, has been by two rubber insulators which: ab- sorb the shock imposed when the engine is accelerated suddenly . Visualize a Circle ‘This new design may be better understood if a circle is visualized. A block of rubber is across a Portion of the lower part of the circle. A smaller block of rubber is placed in the upper part of the circle on the left side and a similar block on the right side. Thus, the engine may rock to the right or left but is re- stricted by the upper blocks. Rubber only is used when applying Floating Power and because of the absence of ny metallic connection between the Power plant and the frame through a torque spring or otherwise, still greater smoothness and complete ab- sence of vibration is obtained. DANGER STATES It is reported that out of the 32,- 000,000 licensed automobile drivers in the United States, 22,000,000 are in states which do not require driver ex- eminations, AND MORE TO COME! The automobile is the heaviest tax- ed non-luxury article in the country, the Automobile Club of Southern California reports. Sixteen different forms of taxes are levied on it in the United States.
