e - # * PROCKS ACHIEVE CHIC! BY FABRIC AND COLOR Dresses for Every Hour’ of the Day Are More Charming Than for Many Seasons Spring is knocking at the door and ‘with it comes the usual number of charming new fashions. Only this year there are more types, and they| ere far more charming than have been seen in many springs. Since ‘women have begun to dress up more ‘and to take advantage of every oc- casion that presents itself to wear these utterly delightful five o'clock dresses, dresses have divided them- selves into four distinct classes. When one shops for frocks in this day and age, it is either for a daytime dress, and afternoon frock, a dinner dress or an evening gown. The four types are distinctly different and present a most interesting picture. The Daytime Mode | ‘There are so many charming models in which to start the day that every woman will be able to find just the type of dress she has always wanted this spring. There are count- less print dresses, in tiny tailored patterns, or large splash effects that are somehow just as business-like ar the smart young executive would de- ‘mand. Many of them have their own little jacket or cape which is detacha- ble showing a smart dress beneath. ‘There are almost as many lorig sleeve ; models as there are short, but all sleeves have some note of interest, shirring, pleating, or puffing. Black and White ‘It is interesting to note that many @esigners have shown a definite pre- ference for black and white for the! daytime mode. Black rough crepes ‘black matelasses, black heavy sheers, | and even some black flat crepes which haven’t been seen for some time. The touch of white is achieved in various ways, smartest of which 4s the lingerie touch which is always popular. But besides the simple lingerie effects, there are models showing dainty ruching at the neck- Yne and on the sleeves. There are quaint, feminine collars in flower- like lines. These are made of organdy. tet and mousseline de sole. While these are very youthful trims, they are the type that will appeal to ¢owagers as well as youthful wom- en. From a standpoint of practicabl- lity. these touches of white are per- fect, for in almost every case, the materials used are those that do not muss easily, and that are simple to launder. = Light Shades For Afternoon ‘Whatever else they may be doing, sfternoon frocks are keeping light and gay. It is interesting to note the amount of beige that has crept into the spring picture. This color with gray, are two neutrals that smart ‘women are acclaiming as spring’s smartest shades. Hyacinth blue touches the note in fashion’s scale. Dawn blue is a new shade that is most becoming and easy to wear. The silhouette of all dresses, in every mode including the afternoon, is slim and straight, so much so that ir many cases designers have had to rack their creative brains to find the hips, and it became a tremendous in- fluence on fashions of the day. There is something reminiscent of Louise- boulanger in the pleats used in to- day's dresses, especially in the eve-j ning mode. skirts, however. They are used) especially smartly in the afternoon ™Tmode, in sleeves where they are ar-; ranged to give a drop-shoulder line! with the fullness released below the | shoulder. Where cartridge pleats are | not employed, many afternoon frocks show simple, little tailored pleats | both front and back to give the neces- sary freedom in skirts. Some of these} are unpressed and give the frock an especially interesting look. | Sheers For Dining i Sheer fabrics have taken a great bold for the dinner type and “five o'clock” type of dress. Not only are they popular for their sheer beauty, ‘but beacuse they are so easy to pack, taking up very little space in the traveling case, and because they do| Tot muss easily. Since there are al- ‘Ways women who are always going somewhere, dresses of this type are certain to be happily welcomed. There are lovely pale de signs done on soft backgrounds that would be perfect in the smartest of restaurants. Then there are black) chiffons, back again and more dra-| matic and appealing than ever. Many | of them have capelets or little jack- ets. When these are removed they become suitable for formal evening Wear.
