Fashion for the past several sea- sons has been marked by a studied sedateness carried to extremes that approximated doldrums. Now thosé who shape the edicts have been in- *spired to make fashion more expres- sive, more emphatic, more lively doubtless as an antidote to the con- ditions of depression to raise the/ spirits and the morale of men inso- ~ @s apparel aspect can influence yebe outlook. So far the spring season we will see not only warmer colors in our apparel but also more characterful patterns. The man dressed to the edicts this spring will look more spirited, more assertive, more ener- getic and hence fashion will serve to create a new momentum, a new ag- gtessiveness and a new vigor that is so needed at a time when men's| ‘spirits seem to droop. Plaids Are Prominent ! In this new scheme of things plaids | ‘become very prominent in the styling of spring suits. These are largely on Glenurquhart motifs that offer intricacy of design without theatri- cal boldness. These plaids in inter! Tand over-woven effects permit of a| diversified color employment even utilizing sprinklings of such warm shades as red, green and purples. Be- cause these arc neutralized with more | colors such as| “"$rays, tans and browns they are by no means flambuoyant or loud but rather pleasing in their tastily sub-| Penei forms. ‘ Tweeds Are Vari-colored ‘Tweeds will occupy an important Place in the fabric lineup for spring | as they have for the past two sea-/ sons but in patternings the tweeds of this spring are decided novelties. While flannels had some vogue last season in odd sport trousers they have not been used with much prom: inence for complete suits for a sea- son or two. Now they are coming back strong and offer a fine relief effect for the two suit man in that| he can go in for the glen plaids and for variety wear a suit of striped flannels. Most of these flannels for spring come in vertical effects, largely in chalk line treatments. Blue with white or red stripes; Oxford or Cam- bridge greys with white or black stripes or tans with grey or red etripes are the smartest effects. Many of these will be worn in the double- breasted peak lapel models. There have been no radical changes in the modeling of suits for this spring .
