Dodge brakes are of the self-equal- izing hydraulic type and do not re- quire periodical clevices and other connections. Easy-riding qualities of the six are largely due to the skill brought to bear on the perfection of its spring suspension, it is said. Front and rear springs are semi-elliptic, 36 inches jong in front, 53% inches in the rear. This gives a total spring base of 80% inches and means that 80 per cent of the 111%-inch wheelbase is spring supported. While the front ends of front and Tear springs rest in noiseless rubber- bushed supports, the rear ends are secured to silent, non-sway U- shackles. E. McKENNEY Secretary, American Bridge Leaguc There is no question but that the squeeze is the most interesting of all plays in bridge. Some are hard magne. recognize—others are apparently The squeeze play, however, that stands shove tbem all is the triple squeeze—where you have to squeeze both opponents and squeeze them on. all three suits. ‘The following hand is the most in- teresting, from a playing standpoint, at )of the recent tournament held in New York City. Mr. Lou Gotthelf, secre- tary of the Metropolitan Bridge League, was sitting in the south. Mr. Gotthelf usually uses the one-over-one bidding system, but with this part- ner he was playing the forcing two club hashes Bidding Mr. Gotthelf opened the bidding with three clubs. West passed and his partner bid three hearts. East ecg a and Mr. Gotthelf bid five clul North made the exceptionally strong bid of jumping to six no trump. Mr. Gotthelf held 100 honors in clubs and felt that no trump was not the spot on this particular hand—that he had to play it where the honors were. Therefore his next bid was seven clubs. Ordinarily, in the one-over-one sys- | tem, the bidding would have been| South one club, Nort two no trump, South four clubs, North five clubs, | and South six clubs. 2 don’t believe | that the hand should be bid for a grand slam. However, Mr. Gotthelf had arrived at @ seven cortract and now pro-| ceeded to play the hand exceptionally | well in order to make his contract. The Play The singleton jack of diamonds was opened by West. East went up with! the king and Mr. Gotthelf in the South won the trick with the ace. | He ran off five club tricks. From metallurgy, wheel manufacture and the hundred and one other manufac- turing operations that go to make up an automobile, have practically elim- imated the possibility of accidents from mechanical defect. All Are Direct Result All these factors have been a direct j result of women's increased use of the automobile. It is not idle talk to say that more than 75 per cent of automobile pur- chases are swayed by ladies. Neither perft 3—Safety in the construction and op. eration of the car. It was with these three factors in the eee he discarded three dia- monds. ‘West was able to follow on four of the clubs, but on the fifth club he discarded a small heart. East fol- lowed with one club and then let go two diamonds and two spades. Mr. Gotthelf then led the ace of hearts and followed with a small heart, winning in dummy with the king. He returned the five ef hearts and East felt the first squeeze. Of course he must discard a spade —this is the start of the triple squeeze. He cannot let go of a dia- mond or Mr. Gotthelf’s queen and seven will be good. Mr. Gotthelf trumped the heart with his good deuce of clubs, West followed with the seven of hearts. Mr. Gotthelf now led the queen of diamonds and West is squeezed. If he plays the queen of hearts, dum- my’s eight spot will be good, while if he discards the deuce of spades Mr. Gotthelf will discard the eight of hearts from dummy and the triple ‘squeeze is completed. First. East was squeezed in spades and diamonds and then West was squeezed in hearts and spades. It was interesting to note at this tournament that many more grand slams have been bid than at any pre- vious tournament, due to the fact ithat last November the rubber laws were changed so as to increase the grand slam bonus to 2250 points—in other words, it now pays to gamble occasionally on the bidding of what be termed a “possibly doubtful grand ‘slam” and naturally these same tac- tics are being carried into duplicate bridge, even though the grand slam bonus at duplicate remains at 1500 points. | (Copyright, 1933, NEA Service, Inc.) j | STILL THEY MOUNT Despite sentiment against them. jrailroad grade crossings numbered 7927 more in 1930 than in 1924,-ac- cording to Milton W. The 75-horsepower V-8 cylinder en-|* gine, with its new aluminum cylinder heads and rubber mountings, the new double-channel, double-drop X-type frame, newly designed head and cowl lamps, bumpers and horn, skirted fenders, smaller wheels and larger tires will attract fully as much atten- tion as the new bodies with their flowing lines, distinctively modern de- sign and luxurious interior appoint- ments. The new V-8 car is the fastest and most powerful car since Henry Ford launched into volume production of motor cars. It is exceedingly flexible in traffic and capable of a sustained ad of 80 miles an hour on the open Secret In Head Design The secret of its power and alert- ness lies in the improved V-8 engine and its new cylinder head design. Because aluminum dissipates heat more rapidly, the all-aluminum cylin- Ger head permits unusually high com- bression pressure which results in in- creased speed, power and smoothness, se acceleration and fuel econ- omy. The cylinder heads have combustion chambers of improved design and are fitted with new 18 millimeter spark Plugs with high heat resistance qual- itfes, The high heat conductivity of the head material also obviates the tendency toward detonation or knock- ing, eliminates “hot spots,” and re- duces carbon deposit. The 90-degree type crankshaft is fally counterbalanced and the piston and connecting rod assemblies are matched in weight to produce unusual operating smoothness. The engine is fitted with downdraft carburetor, air intake silencer and diaphragm type fuel pump. Through achievement of Ford en- gineers, the two cylinder blocks and crankcase are cast in a single piece, the cylinder blocks being set at an angle of 90 degrees. This design pro- vides an exceptionally compact power sign first Ford V-8 tinea in 1932. aan: ie engine reaches its power at 3800 rpm. This point etapa usually “high in the speed range, the Still another feature of visible in the cut-away chassis, is new three-quarter floating rear with its straddle mounted pinion drive. The pinion is mounted in a double taper roller thrust bearing at the front and a straight radial roller bearing at the rear. This per- mts maintaing permanent alignment of the pinion with the ring gear under all driving conditions and results in extremely quiet axle operation. The wheels are 17 inches in diameter and of the Ford welded steel spoke type. Tires are of 5.60 inches section. ‘The frame is cushioned by transverse cantilever springs and four Houdailled double-acting hydraulic shock absorb- crs which are adjusted both automa- tically and thermostatically for every variation in weather or road surface condition.
