Latest Bronx News BERGEN MAY TURN - ALLPRISONERS OUT OF THE BRONX JAIL}: Demands More Rent, and He May Dispossess County’s Elected Officials. ‘William C. Bergen, ex-policeman and now millionaire realty operator tn the Bronx, has taken a definite stand. He holds the title to the only pri- vately owned jafi In this country, and he threatens to turn out all the pris- oners yniess he gets a rent Increave from the city authorities. Bergen will go even further. He'll also dispossess the Sheriff, District Attorney, County Judge, Surrogate, Register, Commis- sioner of Jurors and the whole she- bang of county officers. “Of course It will be some time be- fore this can be accomplished,” said Mr. Bergen to an Evenlg World re- porter to-day, “and there's no fear that all these fellows will be turned scottfree. But I've made the city a pretty fair proposition that should be met. The possibility of the county being without a jail, however, has reached the prisoners. With the ex- ception of three civil prisoners who ave enjoying ‘quarters de luxe.” they are all rooting that the misunder- ; _ standing continues, The exceptions have fine quarters that overlook the park, and they would sooner stay where they are than face the possi- bility of meeing the wives to whom alimony ts due, The trouble between Mr. Bergen and the city authorities arises out of the city’s lease on the bigger portion of Siar! a Bullding at Arthur and au ror nearly ten years some city offices have been located in the buliding and most of the County offices took up quarters five years ago in an annex that Ber gen built. The city has been paying @ cenlal ot 72 cents per squure tot per year, except for the jail, for which the city pays $1.26 per equare foot, Bergen has offered the city its] |’ choice of renewing the expiring lease at $2 per equare foot or purchasing the entire property for $900,000. The matter is now before a committee of che Board of Estimate. “The city has had the property ap- praised,"’ said Mr. Bergen, ‘“‘and has found that !t could not be built to- day for less than a million and a quarter and the land ts worth at least 100,000. There are two million equare feet in the property, exclusive of the basement, which ts equipped with vaults that could be used fo: records.
