B FIRE FIGHTERS OVERCOME BY GAS AT MORNING BLAZE}; -_——— Flames Melt Pipe and Men Are]f Periled in West 20th |R Street Fire. Hight firemen, tncluding ‘Soldier’ Kearns, formerly a well known heavyweight pugilist; Battalion Chief Edwin A. Quinn and Capt. Lawrence Fisher, were overcome by gass early this morning while fighting a fire in the cellar of a four-story building at No. 48 West 20th Street. The cellar and the first floor are occupied by the St. Regis Buffet N Lunch, which was open at the time. The fire started in the cellar and had & good start when the firemen arrived. Battalion Chief Quinn and Capt. Fisher, in command of Engine Com- pany No. 14, were the first to arrive. ‘They all went with a line of hose into the cellar.’ The fire melted a gas pipe which fed the range in the lunchroom kitchen above and the cellar became filled with {illuminating gas, which fortunately did not ignite. The combination of gas and smoke nearly strangled the firemen of En- gine Company No. 14, all of whom realized the peril in time to struggle to the street before they became un- Hy N conscious. Those so seriously over- N come as to require treatment by Dr. 1 N Tompkins of New York Hospital | were, in addition to two officers, Fire- | NW men Charles Kerrigan, John Feeley, Philip Alexander, William Diesey and Daniel uriNa, all of Engine Com- pany No. 14. ‘The men of Hook and Ladder Truck No. 12 then entered the cellar, but were ordered out by Acting Chief “Smoky Joe’ Martin as soon as he jearned of the gas peril. When they reached the street they discovered that Kearns was missing. Two of the men went back and found him lying unconscious on the cellar floor, They |S ged him out and he was soon re- Gs Z extinguished = at something more than $2,000. The cause of the fire was not discovered gre eeeh hg WYOMING PRIMARIES HAVE LITTLE INTEREST Only One Candidate for Senator in » Party, CHEYENNE, Wyo, Aug. 22—Wy- oming voters t to the polls to-day © decide contest for nom Governor and for Wyoming's one mem- ber of the National House of Repre- aentatives a United State: campaign, eandidate 4 SRR} i y premie SALAD DRESSING by _foscsH Leccerta Baked Patty Pan Squash?
