Hold Fast to Sentiment If You’d Keep Happy Keep Out of the Rut Where the Beautiful Side of Any- thing Is Lost to You or You Will Lose the Capacity for Enjoying Beautiful Things. By Sophie Irene Loeb. @opyright, 1022 (New York Bvening World) by Press Publishing Company. FEW days ago I visited one of the largest nurseries where they grow many varieties of roses—thousands of them, The man at the head of this work, Mr. K., has spent many years at it, and when he handled the bushes to show them to me, it scemed to me, in the vernacular, that he war “treating them rough.” I remonstrated with him, for he did not seem to have much sen- tment about the lovely blooms, looking upon them as mere merchandise to be grown and sold. He smiled at my disapproval and gald: "Oh my dear lady, I have lost all sentiment about such thing: I have not a grain of sentiment in my make-up. Roses are roses, and that is all there is to it. I have not any sentiment about anything. Life is one Big work that must be performed and there isn’t much more besides.” And he tried his best to make me realize that he was as “hard as nails," amidst all these beautiful flowers, and that nothing mattered much ex- cept getting the roses developed and distributed, and then home and back again the next morning. T came again to this same place and I talked to this man about other matters. I found him keenly inter- ested in the welfare ittie children and laws concerning them and what is being done to help them, and he wanted a book that I spoke about to read on the subject. He wanted to know low a recent statute affected the families of poor men, and when I left him he urged me to be sure to send him these facts. And this was the man who had sald he had lost all sentiment! Ah, yes! For the time being he has lost a poetic sense of the rose because it is not sent to him as a token of love or friendship. He is in trees and perhaps have great fun in decorating them, He will never lose sentiment as long as he loves someting that needs his help—as long as he is interested in the trials of others. That is the highest kind of sentiment—the senti- ment for those who are not close to you. But generally speaking there is great danger of people losing senti- ment when they stick too long to one thing, even though It be a beautiful thing. For example, I know a girl who makes the most exquisite beaded robes for other people, yet she could not bear to wear one herself, since she is sick of her job, There are hundreds of people who live in the country and who are con- stantly confronted with nature ‘in her most visible forms.” Yet they never see the beauties of it, But let him who has little or nothing of it come out and he begins to wax warm about the most trifling things that the former one has failed to see. Certainly, too much of anything does take away the sentiment, and too much knowledge about a thing acts the same way. For examplé, the botanist who takes @ rose and tears it apart in order to find how many petals gnd pistals and etamens there are, is bound to lose much of the beauty of the rose as a whole—as it presents itself The big thing is not to have too much of-anything, or leastwise so to conduct it that if it is beautiful, it is not lost to you at any time, The man or woman who really loses all sentiment has little to live for and is a sorry individual indeed. Don't permit yourself to get into a rut where the beautiful side of any- thing is lost to you, for before you know it you will lose the capacity for enjoying lovely things and life will bo just one humdrum thing after an- other, Hold fast to one of the biggest ele- ments in life—Sentiment. The Jarr Family By Roy L. McCardell / Copyright, 1922, (New York Evening World) ‘by Press Publishing Co, S DR. GILBERT GUMM sped away with Irene Cackleberry in Jack Silver's purloined rac- ing car, Mr. Jarr picked himself up out of the gutter and shook his ach ing arm after them and muttered mai- edictions upon them. He had been simpleton enough to assist them in taking the car, even in cranking up for them when the self- starter did not work, and as a result the motor had kicked back, hurt his and Beauty Seven to Sixteen ‘ (The Third Milestone.) By Doris Doscher Copyright, 1922 (New York Evening World) by Preso Publishing Company, 'T the gate of the seventh year the doors of babyhood are closed and the child is rexpon- sible to a dertain extent for hor own development, according to her environments and opportunities, The period between the seventh and the sixteenth year covers the adol- escent time and {s of more vital im- portance to the child than words can express. During babyhood there has been nothing but an impressionable life, now, the child commences to live out these early impressions. The school life allows to a certain extent opportunities for some physical train- ing. ‘There is also the going to and from school. During the growing period the re- pair or building vp of the tissues is greater than the waste. Therefore, it is conclusive that the diet of a grpwing child should receive consid- erable attention. At ‘this time she should have an ample diet of yery nourishing food, and milk should still remain an dmportant item on the menu. The child's taste 1s not sufficient guide for the mother in the choice of food, as children are very likely to be finicky about the very things they need most, unless they are driven to partake of them by real hunger or by knowing that they can’t have thei: dessert until they have eaten the more important vegetables, fish or meat If the mother is wise she will see that the diet 4s varied enough so that her compressed on one side and renders the distortion permanent, The spine Is very easily curved from a bad position in sitting. From the illustrations you can see how true this is from the curved position of the model. Young people are very apt to sit in this position if they have an interesting book and a box of candy to while the time away. They are thus committing two indiscretions at ‘once, because the digestion is always impatred when nibbling on candy be- tween meals and the bad position cramps the lungs and curves the spine, laying the foundation for many ills in after life, Now if you will noticg the other po sition of the model, She has grasped the back of the chalr, while placing the feet forward, and twisted the body at the waistline as far around as possible, This corrects the damage done in the incorrect position, as it gives a splendid opportunity for a stretching of the spine, It is such a simple exercise and it does so much fever and so on must not be pendent, ax we now know, upon t ripening of certain weed plants ani Milestones on the Road to Health | A sitting posture like the one illustrated above curves the spine and cramps the lungs, laying the foundation for ills in later life.
