Trading was listless and the price movement was Very Darrow, with no well-defined tendency. Read- ing was irregular, with fluctuations ranging to a point below last night, fol- lowed to a less extent by the general st. The last prices of the day in the majority of active stocks are not ma- terially altered from those of last Sat- urday, although there have been con- siderable fluctuations during the week. The bank statement showed no changes sufficient to alter the uncertain feeling over the money “outlook. Brush Manufacturers, 609 Saeramento St druggists’. the decrease being more than accounted for by the New York City clearings. ‘The total sales of stock for the six business days ending Friday numbered 8,621,498 shares, which is only about half the sales in the corresponding week of last year. The par value of bonds was $10,791,000, representing only half the volume in the last year's period. Outside of the seven principal cities the week's clearings show a large increase over those of last year. The stock market closed intensely dull and irregular in tone. ~ Total sales of bonds $1,075,000. The operations in the stock market during the week have been small and unimportant and the movement of prices was exceedingly irregular. Busi- ness was in the hands of the smaller class of professionals and the market has demonstrated the futility of such operations to effect any substantial alterations in the top level of prices. The factors holding the market In re- straint were much the same as for some time past. The few developments affecting these conditions were not suf- ficient to remove existing doubts and there was a continued paralysis of any effective demand. free, however, from auy urgent liquida- tion. Money rates have been litfle changed during the week, but the light demand for funds for speculative pur- poses is believed to be responsible for this in part. The engagement of gold in Berlin for export to New York, sup- plementing the previous small engage- ments in London, has been of small in- fluence on stock market sentiment. (par value) THhe reception accorded the news of the | intended issue of $100,000,000 new New York Central stock indicates another factor in the conservatism of the mar- ket. The enormous new capital issued since the first of the Yyear has been much ulsc in Wall street as The market was | - threateningsa possible glut of new se- | curities. Most of these new issues hitherto have been bonds and the largest effect has'been perceptible in the bond market. * This market is slow and pond dealers complain of a leth- argic demand for old issues owing to the displacement of demand by the newer candidates for favor. The same effect is feared in the stock department as a consequence of so large ar addi- tlon, although assurances are given that the intended new issues will be offered in moderate installments and at considerable intervals of time, with the privilege to stockholders to subscribe at par, constituting valuable rights at the existing market price for the stock. The undetermined guestion of a coal miners’ strike in the anthracite or bituminous regions, or both; the con- tinued halt in the iron tra vorable comparisons of raf earnings with last’s year and the poor demand for stocks have been the im- portant influences.
