Isthmian = Dfstrict WASHINGTON, Jan. 27.—From Wash- ington to Panama the Gridiron Club took its guests to-night and showed them how to construct the Isthmian canal. From the reception room of the New Willard Hotel, preceded by the Marine Band and led by President Richard Lee Fearn of the Gridiron Club and Presidept Roose- velt of the United States, members and guests wended their way through a laby- rinth of palms and tropical plants to the dining-room, which was transformed to resemble the plaza in front of Governor Magoén's residence in Panama. From that time forward the dinner was con- ducted as 1f the correspondents and their Buests, were beside the big ditch. A pass was issued to each guest over the “Grid- fron Way,” the “Only Airline Beyond Federal Control” and good on the, “Wash- ltnston -Panama personally conducted our.” The initlation of two new members af- forded an opportunity to play upon the Santo Domingo situation. The reckless spect- lation in Reading has been viewed with apprehension for some time. The feel- ing has increased with the later stages of the advance, owing to the notoriety of the longing tactics of the new force in the speculation in that stock, which until & recent period was distinct from the pool operations making the pro- longed upward moyement in the stock. Gossip has been busy with the growing involvement of this speculation, owing to rumored unloading by the pool itself into the venturesome hands of the new party t othe movement, It was alleged that the holdings for control of the great railroad systems even were being offered in the market to check the wild advance in the stock. It was current bellef that similar conditions existed in Colorado Fuel. These two stocks and also Brooklyn Transit gave abundant evidence of forced luidation to-day. Reading's slump reached 6%, Colorado Fuel 5% and Brooklyn Transit 2%. The bank statement was disappointing, but was net decisive in its influence on the market. There was a smaller galn in cash than was hoped for. and the $15,517,800 expansion fu the loan item was not liked in the face of the heavy liquida- tion known to have occurred in the stock market during the week. The rise in discounts in London and Paris to-day, the decline in sterling ex- change at Paris and the strength of for- elgn exchange in this market all tended In favor of an outgo of gold to Paris. Total sales of bonds, par value, $2,565,000. Business in the stock market has been on a very large scale throughout the week, transactions on the Stock Ex- change rising to a total of nearly 2,000,000 shares on two days of the week. The activity of speculative interest is reflect- ed in these figures. But enormous sales to take profits have characterized the market throughout and have reached suf- ficient volume to affect prices and caused sharp reactions at various times. The extent of the advance already achieved In the prices of securities has done much to meet the growth of pros- perity on which they are based and active discussion is going on over the proper prices to represent actual 'enhancement of values which has accrued to all se: curities by the prosperity of the country. In the highly speculative conditions éx- jsting in the market more importance was attached to the movements of speclal stocks. There has been a marked re- vival of speculation in some of those which have risen most in the past specu- lation. Their later flights have been with- out visible developments regarding the properties they represent and without any confirmation of many of the rumors which were employed in the earller stages of the advance. Bonds have been in good demand, with some upward tendency of prices. CHICAGO, Jan. 27.—William A. Then we will do our best to find work for you.” Garland expressed his gratitude and was taken to his cell. Garland made no defense charged with attempted robbery. “Morphine is to blame,” declared Garland, “and T am glad I was arrested, for I might have committed greater crimes. The Federal Grand Jury which voted the indictments had been in Session but a short time when rumors began to float about that certain newspaper re- porters had been approached. Proof that offers of money had been made to reporters came into the pos- session of United States District Attor- ney Morrison while the Grand' Jury was making its investigation. No evi- dence could be obtained, however, ta any of the offers had been accepte As a matter of fact, the Governme information was first obtained s from newspaper men who had been given the indirect hint that they might make some “easy money” if they wished. It was through these vague intima- tions that venal reporters were belng subsidized, so to speak, that Morrison reached the conclusion that the inter- ests of the Government demanded the assistance of the secret service. The matter was placed in the hands of Chief Wilkie at Washington, and through him Captain Porter, in charge of the Chicago branch of the secret serviee, was authorized to watch the move- ments of suspected persons. For a time, while the Federal Grand Jury was pursuing Its investigition, nearly every newspaper reporter connected with the case was aware that he was “shadowed” by secret service operators. The espionage of the Government of the representatives ok the packing com- panies has never relaxed since the be- ginning of the Grand Jury inyestigation last March. This was vouched for last night by 'a Federal official who is cog- nizant of the facts connected with the charges in Distriét Attorney Morrison's letter to Attorney General Moody. When the work of selecting a jury to try the immunity plez began a new force of secret service operators was detailed for duty under Captain Por- ter, those who had been previously working in Chicago being generally known. —_———————— The Epworth League of Springfield, IlL, district will support a missionary in Bor- neo, and is raising $1000 for that purpose. being | Many people suffer and do not know it out of sorts, peevish, do not for physical or men M.'h( at the same or :tno’m‘ch.
