BUNKERS TELLS ABOUT BRIBERY el et S Repeats Story of Crime for ‘Which He Is Now Serving a Term in State’s Prison IS FRIEND OF FRENCH Convict Admits He Lied When He Gave Evidence at His Own Trial for Boodling SACRAMENTO, Jan. 27.—In the trial of former Senator Frank French for bribery, ex-Senator Harry Bunkers again took the witness stand this morning, still under cross-examination by counsel for the defense. After con- siderable reflection Bunkers recalled that he bad been visited in the County Jall by Willlam O'Day of San Fran- cisco. He denied having said to O'Day that if he had to go to San Quentin he would go willingly; that he would be well taken care of, and would have more money than he ever had in his life. In answer to further questions Bunkers sald H. V. Morehouse, his at- | torney, had secured his bail bond of | $10,000 from a surety company, and that is all he knows of the trans);cuon He was too glad to get out to ask any questions about his bond. District Attorney Seymour then took up the redirect examination. In an- swer to questions, Bunkers said he tes- tified falsely at his own trial to keep from going to the penitentiary. Bunkers testified yesterday after- noon that at the conference with At- torney Hiram W. Johnson, which he, Emmons, Wright, Jordan, J. L. Cope- land and French attended., French was the last to appear and only stayed a minute. French asked the purpose of the conference, and was told it was to get legal advice for Jordan. French said he was not/interested in Jordan and left at once. This morning, under redirect examina- tion, Bunkers said he had told French beforehand that the conference was to be held. He ¢ould not recollect. how- ever, that he had told French he was going to San Francisco to engage Johnson to represent Jordan, when the latter would appear before the Senate Investigating committee, and turn the bribe money over to it, declaring that he (Jordan) had never delivered the money to the accused Senators. Seymour here reverted to Bunkers’ statement to Edward Short that he did not believe French got any of the bribe money. Bunkers said that he felt Xkindly toward French and did not want to injure him in Short's estima- tion. He admitted that he was not telling Short the truth when he ex- pressed the belief that French did not get any of the boodle. Bunkers testifled that when the four Senators shook hands at the conclusion of the first meeting it was he who sug- gested that all boodle should be di- vided, share and share alike. French replied: *“All right.” Senator H. E. Carter of Los Angeles testified that one night about 11 o'clock he saw French and Jordan talking on the street corner. He could not fix the date, but was quite sure it was before the expose of the bribery. The case will be resumed Monday, with Bnukers on the stand ————— Boys Accused of Burglary. George McDonnell, 12 years of age, was arrested at his father’s home, 106 California avenue, yesterday by Detec- tives Smith and Burke and taken to the Detention Home. He and George Wafer, 20 Prospect avenue, are accused of breaking a show case at Peter En- gelbert's store, 2505 Mission street, on January 18 and stealing thirty pairs of suspenders and two dozen neckties. Wafer's father told the officerd he had left the city on Thursday. OCEAN TRAVEL. Steamers leave Plers 9 and 11, San_Franclsco.
