Bids for repairing the transport Sher- idan- were opened yesterday by Major Devol. The necessary improvement -will cost $6084 50. Work on the boat will com- mence immediately. ~ The Risdon Iron Works will do the dry- docking, engine, boiler and hull repairing for $4199. Other bids on this work were §4502 by the Mare Island Navy Yard, $4210 by ‘the Union Iron Works, $4271 by the Fulton Engineeering ~and Shipbuilding Works, $7597 by the California Machine Works and by the San. Francisco Iron Works. The Union Iron Works gets the con- tract for the electrical work on a bid of $510. Other bids were $820 by the Mare Is- land Navy Yard, $860 by the Fulton En- gineering and Shipbuilding Works, 3554 by Herzog & Dahl, $900 by D. D. Wass and 3684 by the Century Eiectrical Company. The plumbing will cost §725 and will be done by Taylor & Pritchard. The West- ern Repair and Supply Company bid $785, on this work, and the W. S. Ray Manu- facturing Company $734. ‘The carpenter work will be done by the Union Iron Works for $4450. The only other bid on this work was $51, made by John A. Wheelan & Co. Nellle Wilson, a well-dressed young ‘woman, 23 years of age, was discovered in a vacant house at the corner of Sutter and - Scott streets yesterday morning at 5 o’clock by Policeman McGorty. She was taken before Judge Mogan, and told him that she had come from the cduntry to visit her mother, who lived near Sutter and Scott streets. She was unable to find. the residence and, being without funds, she went into the empty house to sleep for the night.
