They show, beyo_nd the power of question, that the Chief 'Ezzcufr{)e of this State is the greedy bemeficiary of favors which smell of crime and stain the hands of him who gave and of him who received. The Governor of this State is exposed as onme forgetful of his position, care- \ iess of his dignity and miserably small, as one who has accepted the hidden, secret, furtive favors of a man whom authority has clothed with power to commit crimes against the State and to drag its gov- ernment into the mire of dishonesty. INCE Governor Henry T. Gage has confessed, in his humiliating, cowardly, legal quibbles that he dare not face a revelation of his character in a court of justice, The Call is determined that he wmust answer before the bar of public opinion. Spreckels and ‘W. S. Leake in the court of Police Judge Fritz. Having failed in making permanent the applications for writs of prohibi- tion against Judge Fritz, secured in the name of Gage and District Attorney Rives of Los Angeles County, the Gov- ernor has now added a taxpayer to his defense and applied for still another writ of prohibition. As the primary elections take place next Tuesday and the case before Po- lice Judge Fritz is still blocked by the frantic efforts of Governor Gage. The Call to-day continues to present evi- dence to the people of California that it intended toproduce in court. The Call to-day presents photographs of shipping receipts of San Quentin prison showing further consignments of furniture from the penitentiary to Domingo Mindias, foreman of Gage’s ranch at Downey, Los Angeles County, and a shipment of a crate of furniture from the Warden to W. F. Roeder, a saloon-keeper of San Francisco. PROOF OF MOWE SHIPMENTS. Proof is also presented of the ship- ment of an elegantly carved bedstead by Aguirre to a citizen of this city, a duplicate of one made for Governor Gage by convict labor. To demonstrate that Governor Gage Meld a “farcical star chamber investi- gation” of the affairs of San Quentin prison, The Call to-day presents evi- dence proving the wasteful manner in | which Warden Aguirre administered | the penitentiary. Documentary evidence that cannot | be disputed is presented herewith prov- |ing that thousands of dollars’ worth | of household supplies were obtained fraudulently by Warden Aguirre, as- sisted by other officials of the prison. Although the Prison Directors al- lowed Warden Aguirre a sum not to exceed $1000 to refurnish and refit his house and the one used by the Direc- tors, Warden Aguirre purchased from one firm alone in San Rafael household goods and furnishings exceeding $2000. The Call to-day presents an itemized account of the purchases from this firm, EVIDENCE OF EXTRAVAGANCE. An itemized account is also pub- lished herewith of purchases made from the firm of Levi Strauss & Co. for San Quentin prison of towels, napkins and doylies and the quantities charged for the prison use and for the use of the ‘Warden. The people of California have pald for towels, doylies, napkins and other tableware for Warden Aguirre’s home at San Quentin sufficient in quan- tity to furnish a good sized hotel or pave Market street from the ferry building to the Twin Peaks. Governor Gage has declared that the “star chamber investigation” he held of the affairs of San Quentin prison proved to him that Warden Aguirre had conducted the penitentiary in a proper manner and that not one cent of public money had been misapplied. The Call to-day presents evidence proving that Warden Aguirre violated | the law that allows him to draw sub- | sistence from the prison department not to month. For his officlal home ‘Warden Aguirre has drawn supplies from the commissary department amounting to many times the amount, allowed him by law. These supplies have been charged to other prison accounts and the records of the prison falsified in order that the books might show that Warden Aguirre kept within the monthly limit of $100 for supplies for his table. EXCEEDED ALLOWANCE. The Call publishes to-day itemized accounts showing the amount of sup- plies drawn by Warden Aguirre in cer- tain months. These accounts are pub- ltshed as samples of the gross extrava- gance of Aguirre, who has been white- washed by his chum, Governor Gage. KX of Zionists in Palestine have been with- out result. In reply to Dr. Herzl's writ- ten statement on the subject, the Sultan expressed sympathy with the Jews in thelr purposes and named certain con- cessions which. he would grant. These, however, did not meet the requirements of the Zionists. Dr. Herzl says he still has hopes of being able to convince the Porte of the benefits which would result from the settlement of Jews in Palestine. e — Vessel Brings Nome Treasure. PORT TOWNSEND, Aug. 7. — The steamship Senator arrived to-day from Nome, bringing out 7$150,000 in treasure and seventy-eight ‘passengers. The har- bor at Nome was entirely free of vessels when the Senator sailed. While fording Fish River July 2 on horseback, Guard Gayhart was drowned. The body was re- covered. . Some of this furniture was shipped by Warden Aguirre himself to Do- mingo Mindias, the foreman of the | Gage ranch. Other consignments were made by George MacDougal, the ship- ping clerk of the prison, formerly em- ployed as foreman of the Gage ranch. MacDougal is a relative by marriage of the Governor. | SHIPMENTS TO GAGE RANCH. Some shipments were made by the wife of the Gover- nor from San Quentin prison to her- self at Downey, Cal. In addition to proving the shipment from San Quentin prison of prison- made furniture to the home of Gover- nor Gage at Downey, Cal, The Call has also presented evidence to show that large quantities of furniture were made at San Quentin for the home of General Overseer J. A. Aguirre, and that after the furniture had been hid- den away In the warehouses of San Quentin, following the expose by The Call, the goods remained in the prison while Governor Gage was making his “star chamber Investigation,” with the aid of the two Aguirres, Dan Kevane, the former “outside law partner” of Gage, and three convicts who had been utilized to forge bills and accounts. With daring effrontery, Warden Aguirre and his brother, J. A. removed this furniture from San Quen- tin prison a few weeks ago and had it conveyed to the house at Berkeley where J. A. Aguirre proposes to live when he is given the position of Bank Commissianer, to whi¢h he is slated. Later on, as space permits, The Call will present evidemce to prove that ‘Warden Aguirre shipped large quanti- ties of furniture from San Quentin to many friends and politiclans in Cali- fornid and will publish many more pho- tographs of shipping receipts to prove turther shipments of furniture to Gov. ernor Gage's ranch home at Downey, Cal. i S~
