These two cloaks are not only beautiful but they are service- able as well, and that in itself ought to count for something. The most elaborate is by far the most peculiar looking. The foundation is brown velyet, but it is heavily appliqued with tan broadcloth. The pattern is very con= ventional and gives it rather a stiff ap- pearance. As if to counteract that effect the entire skirt is edged with brown fur ' taili. Two rows of them -and fully one hurdred tails in each row. The collar, revers and cuffs are of ermine. It is the queerest looking wrap that can be imag- ined, so queer that no one would ever dream of calling it pretty, but the very fact that it is erratic looking is its high- est recommendation to many a swell so- ciety woman. \ But don't think for a minute that all of them are black or even dark. That is just contrary to the real state of affairs. A beautiful thing is made of rainbow panne velvet. The colors are the main attraction, but the simplicity of it adds somewhat, and at least makes it a noveli- ty. The chief idea seems to have been to see how many yards and vards of lace, insertion and chiffon could be successful- ly carried about. This cape has a chiffon ruffle of pink and yellow that entirely en- circles it. ‘With the exception of two rhinestone buckles that fasten the col- lar, it is the only trimming. A bewildering fluff is made of yellow satin, well, hardly a yellow, either, but that soft shade that comes somewhere be- tween a corn and a yellow. The cape is three-quarters—as most of them are—and it in turn has another cape that falls con= siderably over the shoulders. Heavy in- sertion is laid on so as to form a pattern, both on the cape and on the skirt of the main one. Then there are ruffles and ruf- fles until you can’t see straight. It looks as if a whole bolt had been easily usad, he lining is white satin, and altogether It mukes a handsome garment, Blue always will be popular as it is so becoming to blondes. A pretty ereation is made of old-fashioned flowered satin, It is short in front, but is several feet longer in the back, and fits clo v. Notwith« standing the profusion of silver braid that it appliqued on it and the amount of white silk lace that lends the finishing touches, the effect is distinctly that of fifty years ago, 'his year San Francisco 18 doing herself proud, Her reputation as regards even ing dress has never been the best, but she has determined to not only redeem hers self but to prove to outsiders that she can go them one better on everything that they can mention, and this time it seems to have been evening wraps.
