The flames spread so rapidly that nothicg was saved, Five lives aso known to be lost; four by buralog and one by drowing., The drowaed person was Mrs, Dr. Ch Maine, of New Haven, who, with ber husband, jumped into the river, Her husbaud reacted the dock. No ship that encountered this monster of alr could by any pos- aibility escaps destruction, All physletsns of the city responded nobly to the call for assistance, and did what they could to alleviate the sufforings of the wounded, who were at once conveyed to St. Luke's and St. Mary’s hospltals, where they will recelve the best of ciare.
