C. Albrecht, our staunch driver, Otto Shumacher, and I can- vassed our quarter of this township (Cairo). SOFTENING WATER Rain water cisterns are what the farmer or farmer’s wife usually thinks of when he or she looks around for soft water and there are no nat- ural supplies at hand. But. it is also possible to make most hard waters soft and for some purposes "the softened hard water is preferable to rain water. Hardness is generally the result of the presence of calcium carbonate, popularly known as lime or limestone, which water absorbs as it filters through the ground. It is this sub- stance which prevents soap from dis- solving, collects on the inside of tea- kettles, cracks the skin of the hands when attempts are made to wash with it, and clogs the pipesof the hot water plant. Ground waters of the North- west will probably average as much as 10 grains of calcium carbonate to the gallon and in parts of the South the proportion is as much as 100 grains. . A commercially practicable method has been worked out whereby the hard water, when passed through a tank containing zeolite ores, loses its calcium carbonate and flows out of the tank as soft water: When the tank has become loaded up with the lime deposit it is cleaned by running salt water through it for a few minutes. A tank softening water for-a hot water system, bathroom and other household purposes would probably need this salt water cleaning once a week. Commercial water softening plants ready for installation cost about $300. ‘One should -not be bought before a .sample of the water to be used is test- ed, for the plants are graded accord- ing to the amount of calcium carbon- ate to be taken out.
