And they — have been winning the fight. They have won in every elec- tion in recent years; they have won in the courts; and they have.won in the hearts of the people. Their victories are substantial. To- day they have their state-owned bank—the Bank of North Dakota— their state-owned mill and elevators, ‘| their state hail insurance, their State Home Building associgtion and the best labor legislation in America. The ' people’s state bank of North Dakota is the very foundation and cornerstone of their program. It has reduced the interest rate by 2 per cent. It is rapidly shouldering off the heavy: interest burdens of a state where the people are carrying $300,000,000 - of farm loans. It has helped to finance the state mill that is paying the farm- er 12 cents a bushel more for his wheat and selling the flour at 50 cents a barrel less than the private concerns; it has helped to finance the state hail insurance that saved the farmers $5,400,000 last year. The Bank of North Dakota is today a well-established institution. It has 32,000,000 of capital and resources’of 322,000,000. It has back of it the tax- ing and bonding power of the state, with its $2,000,000,000 worth of taxa- ble property. And finally, it has been sustained /by five decisions of the courts, including the recent unanimous decision of the suprcme court of the United States. : f Just now this bank is called upon to perform a function and a service quite vital and important to every man, woman and child in America. asked to supply a considerable portion of the money required to move the great “bumper” e¢rop of wheat that North Dakota will have this year after - four years of partial crop failure. ALL PROGRESSIVES HAVE COMMON CAUSE For this purpose $25,000,000 to $30,- 000,000 of ready ‘cash is- needed. at once. Meanwhile a financial stringency has come over the nation. And in- cidentally the enemies of the people’s cause in North Dakota; mostly outside of the state, have undertaken to crip- ple the credit of the state by with- drawing loans or refusing extensions. The people of North Dakota are de- termined that their bank 'shall not fail the farmers of the sfate nor the people of the nation. In all of this the Public Ownership league feels that all progressive people ir America have a common cause. Here is public ownership actually in ‘I operation and its enemies undertaking in a sly way to cripple and discredit it. Therefore, we make common cause with the people of North Dakota. Acting under the direction and with the. advice of the management of the PAGE TWELVE - ; sued and is sending to its members throughout vthe» country.
