Weakening of the ploposed dras- tic legislation embodied in the Ken- yon-Kendrick bills, the settlement making plausible the claim that 'legis- lation is no longer necessary. 4. Weakening of the cases filed by the federal trade commission under the anti-trust acts, involving more than 30 corporations recently acquired by the packers. 5. An apparent acquiescence by the government . in the dissolution plans previously begun by the packers, nota- bly. Swift & Co., which-merely trans- ferred their “unrelated” interests, such as groceries, leather and other products, to separate companies. 6. A better public feeling toward the packers, engendered by the hope that the present surrender is sincere. It becomes apparent, from a supple- mentary press statement from the at- torney general, that he has not even compelled the packers as individuals to get rid of their interests in subsidi- ary companies that handle their side lines. Armour or Swift may, as an individual, hold up to 50 per cent of the stock of a pineapple company, a rice company, a grain company, or a cottonseed oil company. FINANCIERS THINK “VICTORY” MAY PROVE ONLY NOMINAL Without waiting for this announce- ment, the New York Journal of Com- merce of December 22 says, in a long article headed, “Think Meat Victory May Be Nommal” “The fact was noted in financial cir- cles that, even though the dissolution may be effected in precisely the way indicated in the injunction decree de- scribed by the attorney general, it will still remain true that the central nu- cleus of the business will remain. This is found in the directoral control of the institutions through which the packing house interests and their af- filiations are currently financed. If the: financial affiliations and types of control through which the packing in- terests have worked continue as in the past, it may be assured that there will be substantial harmony of interest in the future, just as heretofore.” After the packer-Palmer agreement the stock of Wilson & Co. went up. As shown by the federal trade com- ‘mission, and as stated by Attorney General Palmer when he started ac- tion against the Chicago packers, these packers grew from a net worth of about $92,000,000 in 1903—when they were first placed under federal court injunction against maintaining a monopoly or combination in restraint of trade in the livestock and meat business—to a net worth of about $479,000,000 in 1919, when they have in this agreement repeated their old pledges to obey the law. In that period their investments of new capital have amounted to only $89,000,000, while they have paid in cash dividends $105,- 000,000. - And the federal trade com- mission has proved “up to the hilt,” and Attorney General Palmer demand- ed indictments of the big packers upon the charge, that from 1903 to 1920 the packers have deliberately, con- tinually and flagrantly violated the in- junction of the federal court under which they have been operating, by maintaining monopolies, combinations, discriminations, price-fixing agree- ments, ete. Yet all of the guilt shown by years of investigation by the government is now washed away, insofar as the meat and livestock combine is concerned. -INTERNATIONAL FARMER MEET Representatives of the organized farmers of Canada, the Farmers’ union of Nebraska and the Equity Co-Op- erative exchange of St. Paul and Chi- cago will meet in Fargo, January 20, | ‘to consider plans for uniform market- ing of livestock by co-operative live- stock shipping associations, o ' PAGE NINE ADVERTISEMENTS ave’2005.20er Itisno longer mecessary to invest in a heavy stationary engine.
