SWEET UST is one of the mgqsé persistent and dangerous enemies of machinery and the most difficult to get rid of. Dust and friction at every oppor- tunity combine forces to wear out the moving parts of all machinery. Dust is the ever-present ally of friction, and when an excess of both is permitted in any engine, transmission or bearing, the life of the object of attack is short. Friction can be cut down to a mini- mum by proper lubrication, and dust can be eliminated, to a certain extent, by enclosing exposed machinery; but it is impossible to make the tractor, truck or automobile power plant en- tirely airtight, and where air can enter dust will accompany it. It is quite natural to believe that the automobile is most injured by dust, but this is not the case. The automo- bile, and usually the motor truck, runs away from its own dust. The case of the tractor is different; it is more like an elephant, while the motor car or truck is more like a deer. In the first place the -tractor is a slow-moving vehicle; in the second place it is operated over fields instead of over hard roads, and when the sur- face of the ground is at all dry there is a great deal of dust. The wheels and the implements following the trac- tor stir up dust, while the exhaust from the engine often blows it about in clouds, frequently causing the ma- chine and operator to work all day in ‘a fog of powdered earth. . The result of such a condition is ob- vious; the carburetor air intake when . breathing in air also breathes quanti- ties of dust into the cylinders, and wear on the cylinders, pistons, rings, valves, etc., results. In addition to scoring the cylinders and wearing pis- tons -and piston rings, dust will in a remarkably short time ruin, beyond repair, wrist:pin and crank-shaft bear- ings, timing gears and oil pump. No steel is able to withstand the constant grind of dust. Additional oil will not help, because oil that is mixed with dust is almost as useless as no oil at all, and, of course, no engine can run long without oil. This brings up the carburetor air cleaner. The tractor manufacturer should equip every tractor that leaves his factory with an air cleaner, and the farmer whose tractor does not now have a carburetor air cleaner- should by all'means get one and thereby save the necessity of buying perhaps a number of expensive new parts. It has been learned that tractor en- gines not equipped with air cleaners to remove dust from the mixture as it enters the cylinders will, under cer- tain conditions, wear out in an in- credibly short time. That does not pay. It does not do any good to try to blow the dust away by blaming the manufacturer of a tractor sold before the invention of the air cleaner. The only thing that will prevent dust from getting into the heart of a tractor en- gine is the installation of a carb\u'etor air cleaner or washer. All parts of a gas engine are ground to fit to a point measured in thou- sandths of an inch. If the pistons are worn the least bit the compression drops and the power is decreased, while the fuel consumption increases. It is much cheaper for a tractor owner to buy an air cleaner. than it is to buy new cylinders and pistons, which would soon go to the junk heap via the dust route; and the manufac- turer saves in the long run. The great dust danger in tractor, trucks and automobiles fades before proper lubrication and effective clean- ing of the intake air to the carburetor. So be sure when buymg a tractor to ! have it fitted with an air cleanet.
