C. Morris, has here pictured the entry of the American farmer into the congress of the United States. The election by the farmers of John M. Baer, Nonpartisan league man, to congress from North Dakota is what inspired the cartoon. The entry of the American farmer seems to have created some consternation among members of congress but there is much in- terest and enthusiasm reflected in the faces in the gallery, There is a look of determination on the farmer’s face. He is going to have some- "thing to say in national polities from now on—something important. Congressman Baer is only the entering wedge for the eléction of a great many farmers into the national congress. The Nonpartisan league, which sent Baer there from the First district of North Dakota, is organizing in over a dozen states. North Dakota is going to send three League congressmen nexi year, and there will be League con- gressmen from Montana, Minnesota, South Dakota, Idaho and a num~ ber of other states, ) : —Drawn expressly for the Leader by W. C. Morris A political revolution is taking place in the United States. Parti- san politics no longer inspire voters. The big parties are divided into progressive and stalwart factions, and the progressives of all parties . have failed to unite, regardless of politics, to send progressive men to congress. Progressive Republicans and progressive Democrats, as a matter of fact, want the same things, but can’t get them because party lines, that the big interests are so anxious to maintain, divide them. But progressives of all parties, if they organize, can-capture control, and that is just what they are doing through the Nonpartisan league. They have done it in North Dakota, and they are going to do it in other states, where the League is making progress even faster than it did in North Dakota. The American farmer has hung up his hat in congress! “I have been waiting for 30 years fyr this beacon light from the West,”’ says former Senator McLaurin of South Carolina, referring to the League.
