ADVERTISEMENTS Labor Eager for League ‘ (From the Public Forum, Denver. Colo.) For a long time the farmer has been certain that he was not getting his share of the profits being made from his labor, and especially is it true in these days of extortionate profits, that the man who produces the food has been skinned as well as the consumer, He has not been getting anything like his adequate proportion of the profit that has been made from his labor. Two years ago the farmers of North . |B | Dakota started out and organized the National Nonpartisan League in an effort to straighten out political condi- tions in their state, and see if they could not get a little nearer their just share of the product of their toil. Last fall they elected the governor and other state officials, including the supreme court of that state, and put the old line Republican politicians of that state out of business, They elected the majority, in fact, almost the ,entire membership of the lower house of the legislature and nearly all the mem- bers of the senate, who were to be members elected ‘last year. However, the holdovers, with the one or two gang members elected in 1916, gave the old- line politicians control of the senate. The other day the farmers elected J. M. Baer to. congress from North Dakota to fill a vacancy. They have been making good progress up there;, and, have passed some very good remedial legislation. 3 SHOULD PUT OLD GANG OUT OF BUSINESS They have now entered Colorado, and it is to be hoped will succeed in put- ting out of commission the bi-partisan gang that has assumed to run this state for so long, and which has, in fact, controlled the machinery of the state for many years except during the four years that John Shafroth was gover- nor. In these four years, 1909-1912, the greater part of the progressive legis- lation that Colorado has upon her statute books was enacted, and while the gang prevented many reforms that were planned by such leaders of the people as Judge Scott, then in the state senate, now on the supreme bench, E. P. Costigan, Ben Griffith John H. Gabriel, C. S. Thomas and Governor Shafroth, this was a time when the people made gains. In fact, it was the time when we made almost “all the real progress we have made in this state. Since that time-greed -and privilege has held sway again, and while a-good fight has been made for progress but little advance can be seen. FARMERS AND LABOR MEN TO JOIN HANDS If the farmers’ Nonpartisan league now joins with the labor men of the state as it has started to do, and gets a good strong organization as seems . likely from the progress it has been making during the past three months, it seems as though there should be real progress made following the next election. The farmer is or- ganizing as never before, and he is or- ganizing along business lines. He pro- poses to know why he does not get his just share of the-food he produces, and why men like J. K. Mullen, head of the milling trust, can make millions in a single year from his produce. He is also going to know why the sugar tfust can make the millions it is mak- ing, while he makes but little more than a living, although the farmers in the aggregate furnish a great deal more capital in the sugar industry than the sugar trust does.
