Do you remember how they challenged Christopher Columbus to make an egg stand on its end? That lookead like a hard problem but Colum- bus met it. There are a few scattered groups of farmers in ‘the Northwest who are working toward a solution of the egg problem, both from the producer's standpoint and the consumer's stand- point. © They believe they can beat it. There is also another proposal, some- thing on a broader and more com- prehensive scale than anything the farmers have yet attempted, but fol- lowing a plan that has proved success- ful in other lines before. In the next and concluding article on the egg situ- ation, which will appear in next week’s issue of the Nonpartisan Leader, these plans will be told. The Cat is Out of the Bag For a long time I have wondered what was the motive that has prompt- . ed my friend Rudolph Lee to attack the Nonpartisan League. I think per- haps I have discovered it. I think I have discovered it in Mr. Lee's own statement, in his own paper over his own signature. In the issue of March 29 the Long Prairie Leader contained an editorial signed by Mr. Lee in which he says that the farmer is attracted to the Nonpartisan League because the VLea.gue}permits of a definite program and provides for a convention thereby centering responsibility on some re- sponsible body for the acts of the League. Mr. Lee deplores the fact that we have no political party organizations and also sees danger ahead if we fail to discard the present primary law and return to the old party conven- tions. Mr. Lee constantly endeavors to make it appear that the League is a new political party when he knows as well as I that the League does not propose a new political party but en- courages the use of any and all present political parties that will permit of our electing men to office who accept the League program and receive the in- dorsement of the League members and will legislate in the interest of the farming industry. The candidates indorsed by the League file their candidacy in the primaries like any other candidate. They file as Republicans or as Demo- crats and if nominated in the primaries they stand for election on the party ticket of their choice. It is first PRIN- CIPLE, next the: MAN then the PARTY, and we don't care a whoop what party it is that will land our MEN in office any more than we care what railroad you take to go to Fargo. Take any one you choose so long as you get there. { Mr. Lee's article has “spilled the beans.” We now know just where he stands and we. are not surprised now at his attitude for his attitude is that of the old time politician who is in- capable of adjusting himself to the changing order of progress and longs for the spoils of the party convention with its packed committees and its hand picked delegates. Incapable of realizing the fact that society has dis- carded what proved to be the greatest hindrance to the will of the people, he would go to the discard and try and resurrect the dry bones of the old party skeleton and ask the legislature to breathe into it a new breath of life. The “public be damned” policy on the part of the partisan politician, is responsible for there being such a thing as the Nonpartisan League and I don’t believe Mr. Lee or 'any of the old political hacks who have held the destinies of this state in their hands will ever be able to convince the peo- ple that a return to the Old Gang methods will work to the public good. However the debate has done some good after all. It has revealed the true attitude of Mr. Lee tqQwards the one step that has been gained in the ladder of liberty, the primary law. Perhaps Mr. Lee can excuse himself to his friends who know him, but if I know anything of the temperment of the average farmer I am safe in saying he will have some job trying to square himself with them for his appeal for the return of the old partisan political - convention. I was at a loss to understand just why Mr. Lee took such an uncommon interest in the farmer politically, but now I know. The cat is out of the bag and she doesn't look good. However, if men like Mr. Lee will but continue to “gpill the beans” it will be no trouble at all to build the League. N. S. RANDALL.
