FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market FPeverish—Speculation Devoid of Feature and Tran actions Unimportant. GOLD HEAVY AT 1122 78 A 113 58 Money on Call Supplied at 2 1-2 and 3 Per Cent—Investment Securities Lower— “Government Bonds Firm— The Geneva Award. Want Street, } Moxpax, April 24—6 P. M. ‘There has been rather @ skirmish than an actual set-to between bulls and bears to-day and consequently there is nothing decisive to report This, at least, so lar as the history of Lake Shore, Western Uniov and the useal speculative fancies are concerned An ception must be made in the Anthracite Coal Company, which, hitherto held off the market on investment ac- pount, are being offered for sale with a damaging lib- trality. Hence we Gnd Delaware, Lackawanna and Western offered at 109!4 im the morning and going begging at 105 in the afternoon; New Jersey Central weakening from 98 to 955, and even the im- maculate Delaware and Hudson creeping out for sale in A fractional way. There being nothing new to affect the railways, the two sensitive stocks, in tho shape of Lake Shore and Michigan Central, were left to the manipulation of the small board speculators. Con- sequently for the frst the price was ucarly as good at the close as at the opening, at no time varying more ‘than half per cent from 5544, and for the second not co Satisfactory a record, as {t showed decline from 52% as the start to 61%, at the end. In spite of the renewed \ncreased receipts on Lake Shore und the story that Michigan Central has been taken hold of with a view to a higher scale of prices, the fecling is incredulous as to the truth of either proposition and consistently shows itself in a continuance of sales on the short account. The telegraph war, which manifests itself in the fluc- tuations of Western Union soiely—Atiantic and Pacific being entirely noglected by speculato-s—bad a some- what depressing effect upon the stock, under the Ubreatened extension of rival lines; out the supporting inflaence which was so noticeable in the past week was Main bronght to bear, with the resutt of carrying quo- tations some 3‘per cent above opening prices and so closing them. ‘The mystery as to what the whole thing means js. as Unaccountable to brokers to-aay as it was last week. The stock ought to go down, but it don’t, Voila tout, The railroad and miscellaneous market to-day has ‘been stupid and steady, though prices have run somo- what against Western sharos, while they have not varied in the mixed securities. AS asemi-outsida matter, tho acceptance of Drexel, Morgan & Co.'s bid (said to be on account of the Roths- childs) for the entire Alabama award, while looked upon as favorable for the government, is regretted as trans- ferring the debt to foreign countries when it could have been piaced here, it offered in moderate sums, at quite &s good figures and with the decided advantage of re- taining the obligation among our own citizens, ‘THM SALES TO-DAY.
