Matibew Richardson, of Albany, referred to in Prender’s statement alleging {rauds in the Treasury department, was a clerk in Gen. Spinner’s bureau, entering upon his deties about tsi. His duty was simply to count money io the :edemption bureau, and not, as he says, to Keep the books of the de- aig oe for the cancellation of moneys. r. Richardson states that tn 1865 a package of borage amountiag to £10,500, was lost and never discovered. So far he is right, but he further states that a certificate was filed that the money had been lost, and falsely slated that it bad been canceled. The money ‘wes canceled, having passed from the Treas- user's office to Une Suaitor, and from him to vice ft purities | macly | the controller, both bolding receipts, and thence to the Treasurer's office, where the SbLove amount was fo: missing. Mr. Iehardson further states that in 1839, a package of rede currency amountin; to $7000 was not destroyed In the usua | menuer, bot cut ini sips to bind other peckages with ou sa. tuat he was re- sted by Col Fra:.4 Joues.then ehlefof the division, lo make « certificave that the en- lire amount bad heen destroyed, but refused.
