Sek AMUSEMENTS, THE COUNT JOANNES AS HAMLET. The Academy of Music last night was the scene of unprecedented confusion and excitement, noise, ridicule, derisioa, rudeness, laughter and shame, The house was not crowded, but it was well lilled, for probably there wore present over 1,000 people. Once more Shakespeare was batchered, and one of the noblest works of imagination was turnod into a hideous burlesque. Tho audience, “like guilty creatures sitting at play,” evidently enjoyed this travesty, but, looked at from a just point of view, it ‘was not laughable alone, but painful to the extreme. Parody of the best poetry may bo extenuated, for it Is merely like mud thrown upon a statue—the first rain from heaven washes it off and leaves the Parian marble pure. But here was a great drama debased, and dragged in the gutters of the town. To make Shake- Bpeare an object of ridicule is like treating retigion with contempt. There is something painfal in the bur- Jesque which not even its humor can entirely excuse, Jt was certainly very juony. Tho audience was re- Solved tw be amased, and, although it was mischievous enough, it was good natured, It applauded ironically, condemned kindly, eu- couraged insincerely, recalled the Ghost craeily, sustained the noble Count Palatine sincerely, and gen: erally damned everything and everybody that came Within its observation, 1t was a_house coavulsed with incessant laughtor. Instead of bouquets Lootstools ere thrown on the stage, and it #6 a wonder that they were not followed by chairs. So exuberant were tho thousand spectators that the Count was justified in ad- vancing to the footlights just before the feucing sceve in the Ofth act and saying, “Remember this is the Academy of Music. Prove yourselves gentlemen.” ‘The company was one of the worst ever collected, Tne King of Denmark bore the strongest possible resemblance to Fuchs, Polonius looked like Bender. ‘Lhe Ghost recalled the memory of Probst. Rosencrants ‘was the piciure of Judas Iscariot. Guildenstern was a anild study of the late Dolan. Most of the other mem- bers of the company hada general resemblanct to Yesach Rubenstein, ‘They were nearly all murderers of the frat blood and water and seemed to huve per- sonal grievances aguinst Shakespeare, and, if they had, they wore certainly revenged. They ‘not ouly killed bis pl pay, but disobeyed the advice which Brutus gave to the slayers of Cwsar, ‘Let us be sucriticers, ‘bat not batchers.’? There was a Polonius who read well, but was imaudibie; a Laertes who disubeyod every word of advico which the Prince gave to the players; a King who ought to have been in # box with the rest of the bad sovervigns, and not on the Btyge; a Ghost who reminded everybody of an irish policeman en Broadway; a miki and pen- tive Horatio and a Rosencrantz and uidenstein Who were better described by the Count in hie *indepoud- ent speech”? than we can describe them, when he said, “Lwas supported by a tall giant and a little dwarf,” This was a point which brought dor he house, Hamlet dismissed these important characters for the good reason that they did nos know their parts, and were always looking round for the prompter. He saved the audience the trouble of expelling them from the stage. The Count made almost as reat a point when he drove the tall giantand the little dwarf from the staze as when he made Horatio and bis comrades ear ut the end of the first act “never to speak of this which you have seen,” an adjuration which the audience hailed with sarcastic joy, but which we iear the crttica will not observe, “Bat if the company was bad, the scenery was little better, Its only advantage was the want of intelloct—ipability to speak, Its P guage was its salvation. The bial “Hamlet” resembled « panorama of the world, The batucments of the Castle of Elsinore were aepicted by a view of the Dismal Swamp in summer, und the other part of the platiorm was Lake Georgo im early autumn. Then the panorama wandered to the Lake of Como, and then to a sireet in Rome. Hamlet and his eneures (for he had no friends) met in dungeons where the Troubadour had been con- dined, on the top of church steeples and in Alpine vaies, All tke operas the Academy ever brought out wero represented in this cusmopolitan scenery, which proved the universality of Shakespeare's mind. To Count Joannes himsel we are disposed to give more praise whan blame, So far as he is con- cerned those who came to scoff remained to praise. His Hamlet possessed intelligence, sincerity, earnest- ness and gentleness. We may specify its principal fauits at first by saying that bis reading of the text was some- limes inaccurate, owing to want of practice, doubtle: and the worry to which he was subjected; that emphasis was sometimes wrong, and that soveral scenes were rendered with decided weakness. But there was nothing in his personation which deserves ridicule. He commanded the respect of the house, disposed ar rt Was to laugh at the least mistake, an ouly acoded better support to have made @ respectable sucess, His readings were frequently «1 perior, and one or two points were, accoi mg to our memory, original without being forced, “Speak the ‘speech as 1 pronounces it,” begaid, reterring to the speech interpolated by Hamlet in’ the play of tue murder do: Vienna, ‘Again he said, which was new, at least to us, “And for amy soul what can it do to that that, being a thing im- Mortal us itself,” pointing at the word “it” to the Ghost, ana then to himself. Altogether we can only give the Count praise, He played as a scholar, and, in despite of much provocation, behaved Limself ag i gentleman. Horatio Potter, Protestant ; tho Chief Rabbi of the Hebrew ‘Atthe eud of the performance the entire audience adjourned and tok a veer. STEINWAY HALL—MME. DE RYTHER’S CONCERT. One of the most popular and deserving of New York singors, Mme. Jule De Ryther, had a benefit concert at Stemway Hall last night, which was numerously at- tended. The lady is one of the best singers that New York can boast of. A rich, full, telling voice which this lady possesses, united to a schoo! of yocalism such us must interest the veriest musical cynic, was a suffi- cient attraction for the fashionable attendance at Stein- way Hall last ovening. Mme. De Ryther, for the first time, gave to the American pubiican insight into the beauty of Rubwstein’s lovely song, “Thou art like a flower.” The accompaniment of this song was not at all satisfactory. Mme. Salvotti and the Young Apollo Club’ assisted Mme De Ryther ip the concert; but the feature of all was the playing of the Beethoven sonata, opus No.3 Mr. z Vat- ison tsa pianist who has long since earned the tore- most place among the players of America. This repu- tation 18 well deserved, as the pianist is an artist of the very best kind, Judging alove from his performance last night Mr, Pattison attempted a very ambitious feat, aud one that was entirety successtul, We have had’ a host of piamsis, some extensively announced from the othe here tor Jongs to m the Steinway grand seems to bo instinct with new life, his versatility of style, ranging trom Beethoven to Thalberg, nis entire command of the resources of the instrument and his leng experience in piano play- ing (he has studied under Henselt and Liszt), give the virtuoso a power in the concert bail that is rarely known, The touch on the piano of Pattison reminds one of Gottschalk, It is exceptional in 1ts quality, Nothing could be more charming than his interpreta- ou of the Beethoven sonata. We have heard Von Bijlow play the same piece. but the effect was very aifierent. Yet Bulow, who is a Beethoven player, par tzcellenee, never played this sonata with as much spirit and dash and correctness as did Pattison last evening. Pattison ha 4 the first position among American pianists, and, even at this late day, when he is too seldom heard in public, his name fume are unimpaired. LYCEUM THEATRE. Matt Morgan seems to have plucked victory out of flefeat The Lyceum has long been undera cloud. The season has been a terrible one, financially speaking, yet this clever manager has succeeded in carrying a feason through with eminent triumph. Last night there wasa large audience. The bill was one of par- ticular interest. There were three features in the bill, ‘The oid fashioned play, ‘Old Salt; the sketch, “ial Masque,” and the well-known Vurlesque, “Field of the Cloth of Gold,” were presented. The company which Mr. Morgan engaged for those pieces is a capital vne; but the principal feature was the artistic and finished act ing of Miss Uijou Herou, a young lady who seems to have inherited all the talent of her gifted motier. Miss Bijou Heron ts destined to become a great xctress, for even at an early age she displays histrionic abtiities such as havo been seldom seen on the American, stage. THE KAGLE THEATRE. An excellent performance was given at this well- mabaged theatre last evening, whieb, crowded by a discriminating and delighted throng, Tho establishment is fast winning ts way to a high standard among our theatres by the admirable manner ip which it seems to be conducted. Among the attrac- tions last evening were the interesting local sketch, » the farce “Home from School,’ in which Miss Jenmie Hughes, Miss Palmer and Mr. Goodwin sppear, and, as might be expected from such a com- vuation, afferd much ewtnac pleasure. But, aside from the many Ugillant features of the performance, NEW YURK HERALD, TUESDAY, APRIL 25, the new burlesque of “Party 01 by Mr. Kenward Philp, was sufficient in itself to reward those who awaited its presentation, It was received with rounds of applause, ana both author and artists merit com- mendation. Conspicuous for her excellent acting was Miss Jennie Hughes, who possesses some of the first qualities of acomédienne, Her efforts in the title rdle poke volumes for her ability and it is to be hoped that © will appear in other parts where not ouly vecal ex- cellence but bistrionic y tage. Mr. G. F, Fortescue as Mme. Le Stork was irre- sistibly comic and provoked the heartiest mermment. This gentleman seems to appreciate what burlesque ineang, and he neverJuils to catch the proper idea and interpret it There were other good artists in the piece, including Messrs. Tooley, Kelly and Richmond, who personated the parts ussigned them in good taste end to the evident gratification of the audience, Alto- gether the entertainment was racy and enjoyable. GLOBE THEATRE. There was a good house and an interesting pro- gramume at this theatre last evening. Among the new ttractions were Miss Susie Winner, an excellent vocal- ist, and Billy Barry, a comedian, both of whom pleased in their respective performances and won loud — plause. Johnny Queen, Billy West, Wayne and Lovely and Professor Rice prove to be good attractions, Tho comic negro sketch of ‘Tea Table Tattic’’ concluded the night’s bill. Woop's MUSEUM. The piece 1s not without its good moral, and this, it may be said, is always hearuly appreciatod. There were three or tour thrilling scenes that fairly brought down the house, Mr. Byren wi well supported and his sensation secined to afford great satisfaction. SAN YRANCISCO MINSTRELS. It is no exaggeration to say that the San Francisco Minstrels combine to make up an institution that amusement loving citizens could not well afford to dis- pense with, 1n a word, the genial, joyful and jolly en- tortainment nightly presented by tnis intelligent body | of artists cannot but be regarded with the greatest pub- he tavor. Last night a throngod and fashionable assem- | plage had ample enjoy ment for a couple of hours, dur- | ing which the *Entortainment i la Salon’? afforded Mr. Wambold an opportuaity to sing some of those delight- ful melodies with which big name has so long been tn- soparably connected, as well as to imtroduce the merry twins, Messrs, Birch and Backus, whose presence is evor hailed with delight, Tbe programme was excel- lent, embracing some exceedingly humorous sketches, Mr. Ryman's temporanee lecture was a clover pieco of business, while Mr. Ricardo also contributed somo artistic selections, ‘Shakespeare on the Halt Shell” gave Messrs. Birch and Backus another occasion for some of their inimitable efforts; but the crowning feature was ‘The Two Orphans, *+ which set man among the audience fairly beside themselves wit laughter. TONY PAsToR's. This establishment keeps up its reputation for good rolicksome fun and plenty of varlety. Miss Jennie Yea- mana, Miss Kitty O'Neil, the Fieldings and J. McAn- drews were among those who contributed most to the enjoyment of the audience last night. Amusing sketches und laughable tarces helped to swell the biil of the play to respectable proportions, and those who visited Tony Pastor’s theatre last night were pleased with th visit.
