THE STOCK MARKET, Accontemplation of the stock market in its pres- ent condition is like “looking through a glass darkly.” Ome may scan the row of figure, that align the office tapes, from the opening to the close of the day, without finding a single hopeful feature, and will probably be plunged still deeper into the maze every time he asks the reason why. In act from all appearances there are but one or two stocks on the list that seem to want to rise just at this juncture, On the contrary, they ap- pear to be possessed of an easy yielding disposi- tion that drops pliant and obedient to any half-way Treagonable pressure or well concocted tale of the street. or weeks—a sort of dry rot resulting from the want of acircalation of good healthy blood, fresh influences and the power to grip. Meanwhile, hundreds are said to have profited by the decline, having covered their short interest at present fig- ures, yet are now halting between two fires, unde- termined whether to be “bull or “bear.” In the language of the old story they are not inclined to “gwop horses while crossing the stream." We be- Neve that capital, ang plenty of it, is awaiting a well-developed movement in the upward direction, but until the weight of the millstone that hangs around the neck of the street has been thoronghiy tested it is not probable that there will be much of speculative venture. Lower prices than at present are predicted, and yet there is a certain air of hang-dog determination exhibited in the alternate strength and weakness of the market that makes one doubt at times whether—uniess there be some seriously demoralizing events, as, for instance, one or two more failures--hard pan has not been very nearly reached. Should disaster occur—that kind which may get into the meshwork of the Stock Exchange and disrupt some of those fine threads that bind men and business together in financial relationship—there its no telling what amount of grave distrust will be added to that which has already taken possession of Wall street and made men wonderfully cautious of lute in their dealings. The transactions to-day were large and pretty well distributed. Western Union and Rock Island led off as the favorite fancies. The former opened at 89%, touched 90, receded to 89%, improved again to 90% in the second board, but fell off to 89%, and closed at 89%. Rock Island was the prey of rumors connecting the company with Canada Southern Railway bonds and turther setting forth that the dividend to be declared would be only 3 per cent, Neither of these, it is but just to state, was traceable, But they had the effect of causing @ decline in the stock from 106 steadily downwards to 103% at the last sale. Wabash sold down from 60% to 59% & 59% @& 50}. Pacific Mail was steady most of the day at 433¢ 943% @ 43% & 4334 a 43% @ 43%, but at the close went off to 4334, New York Central was firm at 104 a 104% a 10444 & 104, Lake Shore opened at 913¢ and varied buta fraction or two from this price 73g upwards or downwards. Erie sold at 57% a 57 a 57% @ 56% a 57; the preferred stock at 78 a 725. In Union Pacific, Ohio ana Mississippi, C., C. &L C., there was no important change. The opening figure of St. Paul was 46%, from which it receded to 45% @ 4534, closing at 45%. The preferred sold at 68% 9 683¢; Hannibal and St. Joseph closed at 383; Northwest common sold at 58 @ 57%, the pre- ferred at 768 7634 a 76% a7554; Harlem at 120 4 129% a 12033; Panama at 115% @ 115 a 115%; Canton at 848 85.
