A NATIONAL CHEESE COMPLICATION.—Some time time ago cheese to the value of $5,000 was purchased in Baltimore on account of the United States quartermaster at San Francisco and were shipped by rail. The Central Pacific railroad refuses to deliver the cheese until it is refunded the freight charges on it which it paid to the Union Pacitic railroad. This the govern- ment refuses to do, as it is now by authority by Congress withholding the moneys due by it to these roads for the purpose of applying it to the ayment of the interest on the government ponds issued to them. Instructions have been forwarded to the United States district attorney of San Francisco to enter suit for its recovery. Frank Barr, commanding the cutter, in his report to the Sec Says: “I found twenty-two schooners ashore inisid: La Boer harbor, and six on the beach outside, not being able to get into the harbor. Subscriptions of relief have been cont from Philadelphia, Cincinatti and New Orleans. ‘There is no abatement in the yellow fever in Memphis, though its ravages are almost ex- clusively confined to the northeastern portion of the city, where it first appeared. There is decrease in the death-rate. Physicians are ad vising all that can to leave the city, and the trains in all directions are crowded. ‘ne wild- est reports are circulated through the country in regard to the number dying, but it is safe to say that since the disease appeared the number of deaths from any one cause has not reached twenty on any one day, and since the flight of the horror-stricken ones there is less excitement than during the prevalence of the cholera. The yellow fever is reported at Fulton, the terminus of the Cairo ana Fulton raitroal,in Louis also at several smaller towns ’in Northern Louisiana. ANNUAL Session OF THE GRAND Lopor, I. 0.0. F.—At the annual session of the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows, yesterday, in Baltimore, a scheme was presented by Past Grand Sire Stuart providing a suitable and safe depository for the valuable archives of the lodge. A reso- lution was adopted to theeffect that no member of any subordinate lodge shall vote upon any question in which he may be intereste inal action on the proposition to complete a full his tory of Odd Fellowship was pestponed. 1 proposed amendments to the constitution we then taken up, and the following was adopte I of the constitution by add ing the following: “That if at any time the Grand Lodge shall determine that the next sac- ceeding session shall be held at one of the cities ‘so far south as to render it impractica- ble to hold it in September, then they shall bave power to determine at what date said ee: sion shall be held.” The other proposed am ments were indefinitely postponed. ‘The tre rer’s report showed the following exhibit ceipts for the last fiscal year, $51,414.19. A further examination by daylight re- vealed the fact that the building had been lifted enough to allow the foundation to be pushed out of place. A powder can, that would old about tweuty-five pounds, was found under the house, torn to pieces. The floor being a double one, it was strong enough to withstand the shock—even to slightly lifting the house and pushing out the wall—thus enabling the powder to expend its force literally, and thwart- ing the evident intention to blow up fifteen or — men and women.—Haftman's (Pa Journal. ALLEGED DeLiveraTe Artenrr To Run Down A RatLroap Traty.—On Satarday last Attorney General Pond, of Ohio, received a let- ter from passengers going west ever the Cleve- land, Mount Vernon and Columbus Railroad, stating that, while crossing the track of th: Baltimore and Ohio road at Mount Vernon, the engineer of @ freight train on the Baltimore and Ohio road made a deliberate and malicious at- tempt to rum into the first-named train, and only missed the rear car by about ten feet. The conductor of the Baltimore and Ohio train denies the story, and declares that the engineer of the other train is the one who violated the law re- quiring trains to atop at crossings. ‘The Batt- more and Ohio authorities have ordered their men off duty until the affair can be fully inves tigated. The Attorney General will take cog: nizance of the matter, and prosecute the guilty parties. HEAVY Fresuet in Texas.—The Rio Grande has overflowed its banks for the first time since 1869. The upper country is inundated. There is three feet of water in the main plaza in the city of Camargo, and an almost unbroken shect of water from Brownsville to the Gulf. The cotton crop is destroyed. The track of the Rio Grande and Point Isabell ratiroad is washed away for over six miles, and almost the entire line Is submerged and ruined. The poles of the telegraph company’s lines to Brazos are swept off. The mails are stopped and stage commani- cation with the interior is suspended. “Lonp” Gorpon Gorpow has been captured by a Manitoba detective and placed in jail at Winnipeg. The trial of the American prisoner+ charged with kidnapping Gordon is progressing at Manitoba. Keil, the man who made himself *o tprominent in the half-breed rebellion at Fort Garry, will arrive there to-day, having been summoned asa witness. He is said to be guarded ty three hundred half-breeds, weil armed, and bloodshed is expected if he enters town. ‘The Canadian party regard him as a murderer, and declare that it isa disgrace for him to appear in court as a witness.
