The falling off in oar imports is the netural frais of our political troubles and of the disenssion which preceded the passage of the Morrill tariff; the inerease in our exports is due to the failure of the European harvests last year, which hag created an unusnally active foreign demand for American breadstaffs aad pro. There is every reason to expect that the eucceeding months will exhibit the same features, in these respects, as March. Our imports, now that the Morrili tariff has gone into effect, will naturally continue to decline, while the agriculta- ra) prospect in England justifies the expectation that Europe will continue, for many months to come, to require all the food we can spare. The specie movement in March compares singularly with that of the correspouding months of the two years last past. In March, 1859, New York ex: ported specie heavily, and imported little or none in March, 1860, New York was a moderate ex- porter, but took very little from abroad. In March, 1861, New York exported little or no specie, and that to the West Indies, but imported over @ mil- lion @ week from Europe. The contrast tells the tale of the gradual inclination of the balance of trade to this side the ocean. It may be remarked that, notwithstanding the troubles at the South, and the abeence of Southern trade at this port this season, the amount of goods marketed during March does not compare as unfavorably ag might have been supposed with the corresponding months of 1860 and 1859. In March last, the goods marketed amounted, according to the above table, to over $12,500,000, against $18,200,000 in 1860, and $17,000,000 in SOY. Atthe corresponding period of the year 1860 trade was in a very prosperous condition, Money wasin fair demand at 5 a 6 per cent on call; bank- ers asked for their sterling bills 10894 a 109, which barely allowed a profit on exports of coin. The spring imports had not been excessive, and both the South and the West were expected to consume large quantities of goods. The earnings of all the Northern and Western railroads without excep- tion were showing a handsome increase over the previous year. The banks held $22,599,132 in coin; their loans averaged $130,606,721. Missouri State sixes were selling at about 83; New York Central at about 7724. The general prospect was very encouraging; the only dark spot in thr horizon was the litde cloud which overhung the commencement of the Presidential campaign At the corresponding period of the year 1859 the general trade of the country was good, though the impending outbreak of the Itellan war had injored commerce and credit in Europe, and we had of course shared in the injury. Money in New York was worth not over 4a 5 per cent on call, and bankers were get. ting 10974 110 for their bills on London, and were consequen‘ly shipping specie freely. The banks held »748,667 in specie; their, loans amounted to $129,865,7. Missouris were selling at 89, and New York Central at 77%. The weak Spot at that time way the West, the crop of 1858 having been very short; the merchants of the West were neither paying old nor contracting new debts; railroad earnings were falling off, and in Wal street, notwithstanding the abundance of money, the bear was the winning side. A comparison of the above periods with the pic ture presented by the state of our trade and finaace at the pregent time is ful! of iastraction.
