8 The Veterans of 181 GENERAL LESLIE COMBS ON THE PEN: ON BILL A meeting of veterans of the war of 1812, to the num: | ber of about forty, from New York and the adjoining | dities, took place yesterday afternoon in front of the City Hail, to listen to an address from General Leslie Combs, of Kentucky. in relation to taking measures for the pro- suring of & pession grant from Congress. The old soldiers took up their position in front of the steps seagn ft to whe City Hall, and after forming a square, Geocval @ombs proceeded to address them. It was # long timc, Be ait, since he had commanded them etore, and he was gratified to gee them on the presunt | ‘oecasiom, though their number was groatly diminished , fend be feared that tt would be much more dimimished defere the government would do thers justice. The bee | d accomplisbe what war begun by the war pb dof — was, tn fact, tue second war of Inde- pendeves. Their fo rs were doubtful of the resalt ‘ef ther achievements for thet country, but it remained for the soldiers of 1812 to vindicate and majutain the —— ‘of the youthful paviea. Io the latter war Ken- spaky wannct bon ind ber sister States in advancing to meet the ew , thowgh sbe bad no sailors apon the sea whose frehe war to battle for New York was more par- toulariy interested and Kentucky went to the batule teld for ber. The Veterans hed still their duties toward their soupiry, notwithetanding their neglect by Congress. One dred ano #1Xtd acres of land had beeo granted vo each be survivingtoldiers of the war of 1776, but Congress at Abe present day, instead of attanding to the wants of the sold ior of (be lave war with England, distribute’ the money | among worthiese politicians, and one official whose name was well kuo #n, bad carried off enough to pay three regi- ments vo the veterans. Congtess was too much taken up with the “trrepreesible conflict”? and the everlasting | nigger to consider the defenders of the nation, and in | sourequence the claims of the latter were igaored or dis- | regerded. He called upon them to procure the aid of the Megisiatures of their respective States to endorse their @laims and bring them to the notice of Congress. Tho veterans, as the old defenders of their country, should Stand by it at ail times, and guard against the ultraism | ef both the North and the South, So far as their pen- sions were considered he himseif intended to call a meet- fog in Wasbington, on the Sth of January next, and by @esisive action arouse Congress to the consideration of | thew wants. General Combs then shook hands with all the soldiers, after which be was greeted wita nine cheers and the Veterans diepersed. ADDRESS BY ty Intelligence.
