The rain pre-| vepted our landing till neatly 10 o’clock. From the brig, at anchor’ in the stream, w: had a fine view of the city of New Bedford on the west, geno, sun rising ground for abou! three miles, north and south, and extendin: one mile from the water; the hight of the bil! being covered with princely residences. On the east of the harbor lies Fairhaven, a tow: of about 6,000 inhabitants. It is situated on | perfectly level plain, and its tall spires are al that relieve the monotony of its appearance. It was named after this estuary of the Aschu- suet river, and justly too, asa more beauti- fal barbor, with its islands and srprounding Beenery cannot easily be found. There di not seem to be as much activity in the whaling business as formerly, there being but few ships in the harbor, and we were informed that whales bad become so scarce that but few ships now left that port for a ing voyage, Indeed, one was lying at the wharf that had returned from a long cruise, and had not paid the expense of fitting out. The part of the city’ near the water looks old and crowded. The streets runuing north and south are nar- row, crooked, and irregular, but straight up’ the bill. As you ascend about half way they beeome regular, and the city is in squares, but on reaching County street you fiud pal- The wenlth of the sea has been gath- ere, and many an lent sea captain ves at his ease, ei g the fruits his hard labors. Nonte Brrmerwartr. This is one of the pleasantest and most ac- Ets villages on the line of the Old Colony and all River Railroad. The principal business is the manufactory of shoes and boots. One of the inhabitants gave us a sad picture of the “times,” saying that it was difficult to find labor sufficient to support the people. The shoe business had been very dull since the strike, in which this town took an active part. There seems to be considerable business oar ried on in other branches of manufacture ani merchandise. There is a remarkable neatite: and newness in the appearance of the village. Every house seems to have been new- inted on all sides. I did not obsé@rve an whitewashed houses, or even fenoes. Bech house -has a small yard in front, with flowers and fruit trees, and is surrounded with # well- built fancy fence, painted the same cofor as the house. Every cottage bas green blindson side. I should judge that every man owned. or expected to own, the house he lived in.. T streets do not appear to be very wide or reg- ular, and are destitute of sidewalks. If the churches are an index of religious influences, this place must be the best in the world; for certainly no town in the United States, in Proportion to size, has so much property in eburch buildings as this. The value of ehurch roperty in New England in 1850 ‘was $19,- ores and the population 2 406,138; giving & pro rata amount of about $8. In this town ‘we observed five large churches, eosting at least, with the land, $12,000; and the populs- tion being about 5,000, we have a pro rata amount to each man, woman, and child, of 2. We endeavored to visit them, but sue- ceeded in gaining admission to but one—the Methodist. This is a fine structure, both out- side and in its interior arrangement; its archi- tecture is unique, especially in the tower and in the orchester. One of our party touched the keys to the organ, which in tones did not belie its external appearance. We noticed every pew was supplied with a book-rack and books. The pulpit appeared to be of solid Tesewood—altogether, we thought this church most places of worship, gud yet we were told that the other eburches were some of them eu this. As I looked on this enormous iron shuttle, the velocity of which can be scarcely more atfected by storms and bead winds than that of a fish, and thought of it darting through the sea with the apes which is claimed for it, it occurred to me at if a sailing vessel should come in Sts wey it must be pierced through and through, like a pine shingle by a bullet.” i> The White Man, at Weatherford, Ark., sums up the result of the ranger aoe against the Indians as follows: The rangers have cof- sumed twice their weight in beef, at 11 cents per pound; two citizens have been killed; and the colonel of the regiment has been married UF Phelan and Coliendor, the billiard players, are about to inaugurate a billiard tournament in New_York city, and offer a splendidly gold mounted billiard cue as the prize to be played for, The tournament will continue eight days. ; L HAVANA LOTTERY.
