Beary Goraay wat be tooleine ae Gurney is the son | of Joseph John Gurney, ue datingriobas and philanthropist, well known by his extensive travels in this country, some years ago, for the purpose of visit- ing the meetings of ‘the society to which he belonged. | The latter was a brother of the well known baaker, Samuel Gurney; his sister was the cslebrated Elizabeth Fry, and his widow is a native of Peua- | sylvapia. The family name and character are thus | familiar to thousands in this country interested in bearing some particulars of the do- mestic degolation 80 reaches the foreiga sum. mary. Letters received here by the last steamer havo been shown to me, which fornia me full particalars of the case. The Renrs re was the only child of Richard | Guerney, M. P., @ cousin of Joseph John, and was mar. ried to the husband she has abandi rhen sho was only fifteen years old. She is now twenty-eight, and has two children. Her father, at his death, lefta fortune of $5,000,000—one half to her tidren, add the income of the other half to her during her life—the principal, at her death, to go also to her children. In addition ‘o this abundance, her husband is also very wealthy, a Member of Parliament, and maintains a splendid city esiab- Mishment and several country seats. AS a man, a citizen, a hus and a father, rhaps all England does not contain a better or brighter char. acter. Ho married for love, aud was passionately attach. ed to his wife, lavishing on her every attention aad indul- gence which an overflowing fortune and affection could suggest as likely to contribute to her happiness, without for a moment suspecting that her loyalty to him ‘had been Poel until he hear: =| ‘the blasting intelligence from her own lips. A young man whose name is Taylor, had been highly recommended to Mr. Gurney as a groom or footman, to take charge of Mrs. Gurney’s horses, as she was exces- sively fond of equestrian exercise, and was accordingly = loyed in that capacity. Taylor was an educated man, ¢ appearance and pl manners, and three or four r than his mistress. Thus thrown often together, she conceived a passion for her servant, of which ber husband did not entertain the remote- est idea until she openly avowed it to him, declaring that, although the latter bad been as faultless as a hus- band, and i tw pap id de she had ceased to love him; ‘that her art was with Tayior, aud that she had de- termined to abandon the husband for him. The tendercet remonstrance and intercession availed nothing to lessen her infatuation, Friends and relatives who were called in to piead with her made no stronger impression ; and, leay- ing ber children witbout shedding tear, this infatuated being abandoned as admirable a home as woman ever in- habited, and left Eogland for the Continent, in company with her seducer. e letters referred to speak of this sad event as having produced an extraordinary sensation in England, where the Gurney family has long been uni- versally known and loved. In this country, also, where their virtues are as higtly aporeciated by a yery exten- sive circle, these particulars will be read with equal as- tonishment and grief. Sherlff’s Fees. (From the New York Tribune.] By the fee bill the Sheriff is entitled to fees for official services, and commissions on all amounts collected by execution and anattachment. His fees fur serving sum- oe and returning writs in private suits amount toa sum, and he receives 50 cents for each cause on the tat calendar each ierm. The public can form some eati- mate of the income derived from this source from the fol- lowing facts:—The number of causes for trial in the Court of Common Pleas is now 2,590; in the Supreme Court, 2,828; in the Superior Court, 1,536; and the number is in- creasing each term instead of diminishing. The Sheriff therefore receives from the Common Pleas term $1,295, which at nine terms in tho wr amounts to $11,655; from the Supreme Court, $1,414 eac! term, which for nino terms & year makes $12,726; Fess the Superior Court, $768 each term, which for uine terms a year makes $6,912, or $31,298 for jury fees aloue; all for services for which $2,000 would be ‘ample remunora- tion. He also receives st 50 for each inquest before the bah Jury, which is a large addition to his income from jury trials. In addition to the sums paid him by the suitors, his quarterly bill bills, audited by the Board of Supervisors, for rawing and summoning jurors and making official re- turns, are as follows:— For quarter ending March 31.. + $3,724 40 For quarter ending June 30. -8 089 a For quarter ending Sept. 30.
