Respectfully submitted, DANIEL CARPENTER, Deputy Superintendent. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monpay, Angust 22—6 P. M. The bank statement of this day compares as fol- Jows with that of last week: — Werkending Loans, Specte. Circulation. Deposits. August 12... .$117 808,098 20,787,872 8 419,606 71 490,612 August 19... 117,690;199 21,403,448 8,317,689 73,209,910 Increase... $182,100 605,676 — 1,719,293 Decrease: sh — 101,937 - : 5 This statement is about what was expected. We presume that, in view of the increase of specie, it would have required superhuman strength of pur- pose in the banks to have reduced the loans. The public will be grateful that the increase is no greater. The banks will receive this week nearly two millions from California, and no less than $775,000 trom New Orleans ; so that the next spe- cie average is likely to show a large increase. Un- less a sudden improvement should take place in ex- change, the South is likely to supply nearly as mach specie as will be required for shipment for some weeks to come. Whether under these circumstances there is sagacity enough among the great banks to keep the loan column down, remains to be seen, There are many who, remembering the experience of 1857, and perhaps too skeptical of the common sense of our bank managers, expect a new expan- sion, to be followed, as a matter of course, by a sharp, severe and perilous contraction in October. it is said that, in conversation, several leading bank presidents have avowed their belief that the banks will have $125,000,000 of loans on Ist October. If this be so, it will be safe to expect the banks to hold less that $10,000,000 in specie on Ist No- vember. Bank managers must remember thit in the months of October and November a large number of perfectly sound mercantile houses in this city will require accommodation from the banks, and that, if they cannot get it, at one price or other, many of them will oreak. And bank managers mus wlso remember that these same mercantile houses und their friends have the power to break the banks, s they proved in 1857. If, therefore, by a foolish end comparatively unprofitable expansion in August ud September, when money is barely worth seven percent, they incapacitate themselves from per forming their proper duty of aiding solvent me: chauts in October and November, they will know what they must expect. ° Money is very easy to-day. We hear of call loans below 6 per cent, and the bulk of the business in paper is at 7. Names which a week ago were bardly current at 8, now go readily at 7. Ex- change continues flat. The correspondents of the Kothschilas hold at 110j for 69 days sterling bills, and 5.14} for franes; but these rates are consid- erably above the market. We hear of no sp xoing to Europe by the Boston steamer of Wed uesday. The excitement in the stock market continues and prices are again higher, with a fair business doing. The brokers still complain, however, of a want of orders from outside. Michigan guaranteed is being freely taken, it is said, by a party of capi- talists at Boston; various conjectures are afloat with regard to the cause of the movement, We can trace none of these to any reliable source ; those who are familiar with the bistory of the stock seem to be expecting some d velopement which may justify the recent advanc the stock opened to-day at 26, and was fully sup- plied at that price by a prominent holder; it after- wards rose to 4 reacted in the afternoon, and closed at 24] bid. It is understood that a jobber who bas for some months been operating largely und snecesefally for the fall in this stock was to-day nvable to fulfil his contracts. It is to be hoped that the bears, who have taken so much money out of the pockets of their opponents, will not,oa the tirst turn of fortune’s wheel against them, end the game by defaulting on their contracts. Rock Island was better to-day. The stock sold freely at 64}, and closed at 64} bid. The company’s agents here have been telegraphed that the business of the road already requires a new freight train to be put on. Galena was also higher, and is freely bought by its friends. Toledo advanced to 23, closing at that bid. New York Central rose to 73}, and closed at 73 bid. The Convention at Niagara agreed to raise freights on the third and fonrth classes tea cents per hundred, or $2 per ton; the arrangement will not, however, be carried into effect until some Western connecting lines have met and ratified it. A meeting has been called for Thursday next at Cleveland. The presidents of the three trunk lines represented at Niagara parted on excellent terms with each other; it is the belief of those who should know that there is no danger of any renewal of competition, this year at all events. ‘Pacific Mail was more active to-day at ® moderate advance. The company’s relations with the Commodore are in elatu quo. We have veseon to believe that there is no truth in the story about the reopening of the Nicaragua route. Quake a number of individuals say they are going to open it; bat people had better not be in any tarry to buy through tickets via that route. It is extremely doubtful whether the Nicaragua route will ever again be permanently opened for brisi- nese until United States troops are quartered in Nicaragua, or until that covutry is Americanized. ‘there is no movement in State stocks; railway bonds are more active.
