There where lotteries, where for a shilling you might be eure of winning ® prize worth two or three ceats, aod might perebance even hope, by an almost imyoasidle cast of the dice, to obtain & galvanized watch or a set of piated earrings. There 4m exbibition of the bajtte of Sol ferino to be seen ip a iitvle tent for two cents, There was a bowling alley, at ono cent x ball. There were oppor tupities tO try your skiil as a marksman, either witb @ xpring gon, or iodia rubber batis; there were sxings and whirigiga, and places “to try your weight,’ to “test your lunge,” lo “try your strength,” ana even to ascertain the power of your fist, at two ceats per biow. All these, as well as the Inger bier and re- ireebment stands, were patropized liberally, and yet there ss bariy any mavifestat on of dikorder'y conduct, and not s dropken man was to be een. The police carried eway two or three pickpockets, as they have often baa ooresion to do from fasbronabie churcbes, but otherwise the wbole affair passed off in the most quiet and reepectsbie manner. The doats and care began to be crowded cp the return trips as early as seven o’c!ork, ant by nine o'clock the grounds were eutirely cleared. ‘And so ended the grand Sunday concert at Jones’ Wood. Tue Son or THE LaTE Rev. Joun N. Marrir.— We copied the other day from the St. Louis Repub- licana notice of the death of young F. A. Maffity the youngest son of the late distinguished divine, under circumstances which we are satisfied are entirely erroneous. The young man, when but fit teen years of age, evinced a precocity of talent most unusual. He commanded at that early age a steamer running between Galveston and Houstén, in Texas; he was subsequently at the battle of Monterey, aud has been constantly dependent upon his own resources for his own maintenance. He was a young man of great spirit aud unquestiona- ble integrity. The charge alleged against him, of having perpetrated a forgery for a small amouat, is inconsistent with every circumstance connected with hin. We regret having carelessly copied the paragraph, as it might be construed into an unfriendly allusion to the Rev. Mr. Maffit, who hes been dead for more than ten years, and of whose family there are but three remaining—Mrs Lamar, wife of the former President of Tex as, and now Minister to Central America; Mrs. Dr. Alexander, of Richmond, Texas; and Lieutenant John N. Maffit, of the United States Navy, whose capacity and gallantry as an officer, and whose reputation as a gentleman, are pro: verbial in all parts of the country. Personal Intelligence. Ren.
