Hoe was not for gale, and there were some democrats of his disposition left. The county had expe- rienced nothing but embarrassment and conflict in its pub- lic offices these three years; from such invidious proceed- ings as the new tax law contrivance. For bis part he was henceforth determined to fight it to the bitter end, and no bribes of patronage weuld stop bim. Supervisor Kennepy interrupted with some remarks re- lative to the ——_ of Caspar C. Childs, the inti- mate friend of Mr, Mr. Purpy repudiated the assumption that he was to be influenced in that way. He stood up in vindication of the rights and dignity of the county. If it was the intention to revive the crusade which bad ly exhausted iteelf against the Corporation, and now attack the county, he would confront all the dieaster which repudiating the tax lovy might bring sooner than = ‘an inch to the policy of that dictatorship which domineered over tho other ride of the Board. He said this Board had been wilfully defrauded, and the established laws of the county dicordered and trifled with for the advancement of cor- rupt bargains with office seckers. He spoke severely of the Comptroller’s appointments, and alluded particularly to the members of the Legislature then present, who hai just reaped the reward of the underhanded game piayed ‘et the expense of the Board in the late Assem! Ny. Supervieor Kxnyepy (at the private suggestion of one of the asscssors) said those Assembiymen who were present (Messrs. Reilly and J. L. Smith of the tax offloe, late of the Assembly), had not voted for the bill. Supervieor Prrpy said he understood all about that. He knew how the legal copeequences in such cases could be dodged. ‘ibey had their reward for the present, and they bad doubi!ces earned it after their manner. In the case of the new Tax law, where neither an inteiligible vote bor any digcustion whatever had been risked, it was nota vote that was needed. He was determined to drive such persons from the public trusts of the county, and cared notte wbich party they belonged. He would think ita diacredit to be aerociated with them. Supervitors Buccs, Bsit and Roacu suetained the position of the President, and on the vote to receive there were five om each side, two democrate—Mesers Connor and Tweed—beirg absent. A motion to adjourn to next day, made by Supervisor Kennedy was lost, and a eubstitute to adjourn uotil Tace- cay of next week was carried. The disposition of tho ascerement rolls is, therefore, to lie on the table without apy recognition of the Board, but eurjest to the examiaa- tion of their committees who Jet to report upon reso- lutions referred to them for that purpose.
