The Gold Mines of North Carolina, TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. W your issue of Saturday you print a letter from a cor- Yespondent describing ‘“‘a trip to some of the Southern States,” which also received editorial notice the samo day, adopting the views expressed by the traveller re- specting the resources and wealth of the North Carolina gold mines. Tho opinions thus given are calculated to Mislead, and perbaps do injury to persous who might be imduced by their glowing character to unite with fresh gebemes of speculation in the mines of that and the ad- joining gold producing States. Your correspondent is un- queetionably sincere; but his errors, doubtless derived from stories told him, are great and important. Ipaesed over the same route taken by the writer of that letter last summer, and visited numerous mines in ‘North Carolina and Virginia. I haye also been several times at many of the gold mines in Virginia, on former occasions. The inviting picture of uncounted wealth and surpassing richness of that portion of the great Gold Belt ie uw fency eketch. Any one who bas studied the course apd general characteristics of that ‘belt’ knows that it exhibits far leesicouspicuous richness this side of the Gulf of ‘Mexico than beyond it; and that the ores ofthe four South- ern gold producing States are comparatively jean. There Dave been found spots or ‘‘pockets’’ of prodigious wealth; Dut the general fact is not one of riches ut all compara- bie w that of the Califorom formaion, They may be richer than Pike’s Peak, and if 60, alas for those who go to to Pike’s Peak! Frls 1. were even otherwise, it should be remembered ‘tbst every inch of gold property in North Carolina is under a fee title, aud forbids “squatter sovercignty,” even if NorthrCarviina were uot a democratic, anti-squat fer State. Your own opinion, and that of the letter wri- ‘ter is, that Yankee energy anc Yankee capita! would dig Out thet vast amount of good gold now clustered in the Baude and rocks and lying snugly together, perdu, wait- ing only to be helped outto the light of day and the rasp of eager palms. North Carolina and Virginia aro fal of the wrecks left behind by defeated ‘Yankee ener. gy and Yankee capital.” More than twenty millions of dollars bave gone oat of New York city alone to those mines, spd are buried und jost in them. It is probable tbat scarcely amine in that region, or avy sort of gold working, produces a respectable per centage upon the outlay of mere expenses; and if the cost of putting that $500,000 iuto the miot at Charlotte were counted, itis improbable that it would exceed that sum. Certainly it doer not generally pay very large dividends to those en- gageo, There are exceptions, but this isthe rule. There is vo place that I have heard of where “washings” are practised by the hand to any extent. The best results, ‘and those not large, are generally where a few men se- ure a spot and work it themselves ina cheap way. At allevents, the balance in former trials, by the aid of science, skill, machiwery and money, is many millions on tbe wrong tide of the locger. e go) of the four States mentioned, is sought for ‘by regular mining. The day for the pioneer gold eceker ug parsed in those States long years ago; so that if the gyatancho of adventurers,” sugg ‘by your corres- pendent, were to go there, they would have to just “avalanche” back again. But the story of the eccentric old gentleman who pioughs up his gold, I deem it my duty te faithfully und respectiolly believe. ‘It is “a travellor’s story,” and therelore sacred from suspicion. We are not to believe, however, that there is more than oue such ondred scres, and’ one such grim genius presiding; so that ploughing for gold will be confined to one Dlessed, yet un-blessed, “ eighty or one hundred acres.”? When that odd old man dies, “may I be there to ough.” “ J acs however, not to bo misunderstood. There are in- exhaustible deposits of gold in the four named States; ‘and several known very rich mines, open aud working, or ‘that bave been worked until the proprietors bad worked their pocket books al! out. But there ig no method as yet known by which more than thirty or thirty-five per cent Of the god in them can be obtained, The waste causes the imposeibility of making the business pay to any ex- tent. When some proper metallurgic system is mado pmbiic, the gold property of the South will go up like a rocket; the balance of the proverb may be ee A Picture of the Mississipp! Flood—How it Looks Along Shore. ‘The Memphis Appeal of the 2st has the following in egard to the flood in the Mississippi. It says:— The eights that met our eyes at intervals was of the mort psinful ceecription. Plantations and villages were everywhere overflowed, and wet and mould—tne effects of the overflow—were in and about the houses. The hovrex themselves were either in or over the water; ‘when built on pillars, the water was flowing beneath, and the tenants prisoners within, the skiff or dugout being the only “vehicle” for going abroad. Houses less ele- ‘vated were degerted, and the universal flood was carry- ing deselation, decay, and, too probably, disoase into every apartment. Ip many iostances flatboats were moored beside such Dubitations, two thirds of which were occupied by horses, hoge, cows and chickens; a portion of the remainder was Toofed over, and there lived the negroes, and there the feed and provisions, brought down by passing boats, waa ‘ceerved. Every boat is hailed with earnest anxiety for news of the state of the river above. Many of the Citizens show signs of great depression; they bore up bravely against the calamitous flood of last summer, bat 2 second affliction of the same kind, following 80 closely on the heeis’ef the first, has proved too much for their courage, and ‘heartrending complaints are mado of cifhculty and privation, This is, however, by no means universally the cage; there are brave hearts that bear their misfortunes cheerfully; we have heard of one ‘of the * drowned out” who congratulated himself that it meat and ‘‘cmicken fixens” were scarce, he could keep Jent like a bishop, having nothing to do when he wanted & breakfast but to let downa rail amd permit a catish to enter. At Helena the leveo has successfully kept the place froin overflow. Napoleon is also tolerably well protected, the levees along both the Mississippi and the Arkansas Tivers are in good condition; the seepage water, however, fills the }ow grounds in the rear of the place. e grave- yard, more »xtensively tenanted than the city itself, lies g the banks of the arkansas, and between the river ‘and the levee; the consequence 18 the abodes of tho doad ite beneath the flood, and the gravestones and monuments peep above the flowing waters. At Lake Providence the ‘water is excluded, but the whole place looks moist and muddy. At Vicksburg we did not find, as was recently announced in a Western paper, that “the whole city was #wamped by the rushing tide of the Mississipp!;” the fue ‘old bills on which the city staads still raise their heads Proudiy beyond the “winding wave, and mirror thetr imege in the glosry tide.” So high have the waters risen, however, even in this elevated spot, that the boats tie up “cheek by jowi’? with the houses, some of the awnings of which they have knocked down, Micnigan Warar Cror.——The Clinton (Mich.) NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, MAY 3. 1859,—TRIPLE FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Mowpay, May 2—6 P. The in- crease in specie'was hardly expected in the face of so large ap export, and very few of the bank managers looked for adeciine in the loans after the decline of last week. All the internal exchanges, with the exception of those of New Eng. land, are now in favor of the city. For some woeks tocome the arrivals of specie by express will nearly balanca the export to Europe. Itargues, however, asound conservative temper among eur bankers not to sutfer the accumulation of country balances here to betray them into unwise exparsions. The time will come when commerce will need all the aid which the banks can afford. By that time & large part of the government securities which go now to Swell the bank loans and discounts will have been dis- posed of, and a large amount of money liberated and ready for the use of the mercantile community, But in the meantime the closer the banks keep to the patho eafety the lees danger will there be in the autumn. Ina few months, should the present crop indications be verified, large sums will be needed to move the Western crops. The more the banks are expanded when this demand eprings up, the greater the embarrassment among busi- ‘ness people bere; and the sounder the condition of the banks, the more aid they will be able to afford to the merchants, and the healthier will be the progress of the general recovery of commerce, industry and enterprise, Money is again reported easier to-day. We hear of 2ome lines of six months’ paper going at 534; and mouey is offered on stocks at six per cent for long periots of time. To the brokers it is offered far beyond the wants of the street, at 4. Exchange opened very firm for the Boston steamer at 1103; a 11034; but the business done was light. Tbe next specie ehipment from here, on Satur- day, will probably be heavy. By the arrival of the North Briton at Quebec we have advices from Liverpool to the 20th. The point of the news consists in Sarcinia’s acquiescence in the Austrian demand that she sbould digarm, which caused a slight recovery ia the funds both at London and Paris. Cotton, however, continued depressed. Breadatuffs were very buoyant; an advance had taken piace in both the London and the Liverpool markets. Provisions had advanced. The Lon- don Times reports sales Illinois Central shares at 40 a 33 discount; do. 7 per cont bonds of 1860, freelands, 84; New York Central Railroad shares, 70 a 72; Erie Railroad, 9212; Pennsylvania Central sixes, first mortgage, 90 a 93. The vpward movement in stocks which commenced on Friday afternoon continued today, and the bears were feverely punished. The two leading stocks of the day were New York Central and Rock Island. Central bas become #0 ecarco that many houses were unable to make their deliveries on Satur- day and today. A large number of shares have been absorbed at the low prices current last week; of the balance remaining in the street, enongh was taken up by a few skilful operators on Saturday to embarrass the sellers very materially. The stock opened this morning at 7334, advanced, with an active demand, to 744, declined to ‘743¢, and closed in the afternoon at 7444 bid. Should the roads decide to put an end to their guicidal quarrels, and torestoro fares to their old figures, the present upward movement would acquire a very marked accession of strength. The movement in Rock Igland continues very vigorous, The purchasers, so far from seeking to make Acorner, are lending their stock to parties who have de- liveries to make; none of the buyer’s options have been called in, and the rise is simply due to the absorption of the stock by outside parties. It opened this morning at 59, rose to 60, and closed in the afternoon at60%. A very vigorous attack was made by the bears on this and other Western stocks this morning, mainly on the strength of the war news; but the effect produced was small. Ga- Jena, Toledo, the Michigan shares and I!linois Central held their ground; in the afternoon they were better. Hudson River continues to be sold on sellers’ options by the par- ties who have gold it all along; the price, however, doas not vary much. Erie was stronger to-day; it touched 834, and closed at that Ogure. The fourth mortgage bonds which sold the other day at 40, were in demand this morning at 45. If the public could feel satisfied that the President of this road cared as much for its interest as for the annoy- ance of its rivals, its bonded securities would not be as de- pressed as they are. State stocks continue firm aad in good demand. At the afternoon board prices were strong. Pacific Mail, of which there were no sales at the first board, sold at Saturday’s price.
