6 Our Richmond Correspondence. Rucumowp, Dec. 10, 1855. he Late Rebellion in the Empire of Democracy—Review of Former Difioulties—A Great Tempest ina Small Teapot— A Traveatie upon Shakspeare’s ‘Much Ado About Noth- ing!"—Blood and ‘thunder—Innocont Whigs Entrapped- The past week has been an exciting one to the demo- racy of the Old Dominion. The fires of civil (or rather wueivil) war have again been lighted, and a portion of dhe democracy have been caught in open rebellion to the reigning junto, The conspiracy was, however, nipped in the bud by Mr. Deneafe, of the Senate, on Tuesday—the gecond day of the session—dy a motion to go into the lection of United States Senator on Saturday. As the readers of the Hnap may not have an ac- Quatatance with Mr. Deneale, it may be well enough to give bim a passing notice. Mr. Deneale is the Senator from Rockingham, dresses in homespun, and looks as if butter would not melt in his mouth. Simple, however, ‘as he looks, be is nobody's fool, but is one of the sharpest 01d cocks in the democratic pit. In his younger days he stood high as an evangelical preacher, but getting tired of ¢he short commons which are portioned out to evange- ists among the unchristian Tenth Legionists, he deserted the army of the Lord and went over to the locofocos, among whom he is understood to have fared better. ‘To see him in his homespun gearand demure counte- nanoe, one would little immgine him to be a perfect mar- tinet in party drill, or that he was one of the shrewdest Of the very shrewd wire layers and trigger setters of the 4g004 old Commonwealth.” ‘The tull measure of Mr. Deneale’s shrewdness has never been developed until the advent of his motion. It has been uaderstood by the knowing ones that the democratic portion of the democratic party would make strenuous efforts to put ex-Governor Floyd in the United States Senate in place of Mason. By democratic portion, I mean the same party who endeavored to nominate Leake for Governor, last year, in place of Wise, and, in coutra- distinction, the Enquirer Junto, a faction which nobody is green enough to suspect of having » particle of democracy for the last twenty years. It wili be remembered that the Leake party was headed =by Hughes, of the Hzaminer, and Charles Irving, of the Lynchburg Republican, while the Junto forces were lod by Ritchie and Pryor, of the Kn- quiver. Im this (the nominating) convention, Hughes ‘and Irving had managed to secure a majority of the dele- gates from the different counties, supposing, in their in- nocence, that a majority ot the delegates would dictate the nominee. The result shows how little they knew of Gemocratic usage. Ritchie and Pryor had provided for j ust such an emergency, and came down upon the Leake ‘men with a shower of proxies that covered them com- pletely. Ofcourse, the latter were furious, Hughes and ‘Irving raved like madmen. The voice of the people was overslaughei; but when were the people not overslaughed, ‘or considered of the slightest moment, whenever it was not ia unison with the Junto dictation? Hughes and Irving lost their candidate, but obtained an insight into ‘democratic usages,” and the sovereign virtues of wire- pulling and trigger setting, which should have been an equivalent for their dtsappointment, but which, the last effo:t shows, they have made but a sorry use of. The next issues of the Examiner and Jepublican breathed forth fire and fury, and promulgated threats of terrible vengeance, Had their threats been carried out, “Only, of Onancock” would have been not only defeated, but buried beyond the hope of reeurrection, and would now have ‘been fishing for oysteis in the creeks of Ascomac, instead of fishing for the Presidency; and in that view, for the favor of meu of every hue and phase of opinion, from Gen, Quitman and Jeff. Davis te Joho Van Buren and Dougtaas—I do not mean the little Douglas of Ilinois, but the bigger, though perhaps, blacker Douglass of New York, But a most wonderful change same over the spirit of hese valiaat rebels. Hughes, after raving like a mad ‘buil for a few weeks, besame suddenly quiet; and instead Of continuing the ‘fits”” he bad promised Wise, wunt to worl foc him likea beaver. At the same timo, Chariey ‘Irving, for the first time in his life, ‘‘ caved in;’ and not Ouly belabored Sam in his paper, but pelted him with any quantity of hard arguments, and harder jokes, from ‘the stump their exertion talents and influence they eiected Wise; but found, after the smoke and ex- citement of the battle had cleared away, that theic exer- tious bad no more effectually kiHed Sam than themselves. ‘Wise ia too vain to imagine for a moment, tha: anybody had anything to do with Sam’s defeat but his own modest elf, and consequently feels under no obligation to them for coming to his rescue, while the Enquirer Junto would gee them at the devil betere they should have # ccumb ‘of either spoils or glory. Disappointed again, axa smart. under the reflection that they had been Bocus pocus- in, tbe rebel chiefs concocted another secret re- Dellion for the purpose of ous' Mason from the United States Senate, and putting Floyd fa his place. They determined that, this time at least, the Junto ehould not forestall them. Mason’s term of wer vice would not a under two snd a half years, giving r laying thle | wires and setting their triggers. They commeceed immedia laid out their pians, and negotiated combinations with such care and caution that their success neemed certain. Al) was done before the meeting of the Legislature that could be, Jeaving only a tow weeks log rolilag among a few addition: ‘al membera before the plot would be ripenet, when it was to be aprung upon the Junto, But who did they expect to fool? ~Whie conspirators were concosting their plans, and, as they Linge had enveloped then in im- Penctrabie secresy, the eye of the Junto had ferretted out every secret, tracked every # step, and prepared to check- amate every move. Waile they—good, easy souls—wore i~ saying the wires for operations & few weeks hence, ‘Parson Deneale, on the second day of the cession, rose in ibis place, and with an air of quiet innocence moved that the ture, the House concurring, go into theSena- ‘torial election on the Saturday tollowing. Deneale’s rotion slipped quietly through the Senate and came down upon the conspirators of the House like a ‘bombshell, scattering their wires and triggers to the devil, and filling them with consternation. They had Deen caught flagrante delicto, in the very act of treason. They koew something of the quality of demo- cratic mercy, and they sbrank ast at what now seemed their inrane temerity. The fire of old Deneale’s eye nerwed to wither up their very heart strings, Terri- die visions of the wrathful Knight of Accomac flitted be- fore their excited imaginations, and they trembisd in un- disguised terror, as they retlected that he would proba- bly bang them as high &¢ Human, an clevation he had designed tor Nerthern Yankees, until he reflected that Yonkee votes might be useful in the Presidential contest. Poer devils! Their leaders endeavored to bring them to the actatch on a vote to postpone, but it was no use. Only a desperate eight or ten said ‘“Aye”—the mass en- Geavoring to propitiate the genius of democracy by the Garliest poasible submission, But the victorious Junto have not escaped altogether seathelesa. The next issue of the Kxaminer came down upon the Juntoites “like a thousand of brick,” and ia a atyle that made them wince agaio. Hughes’ "yeader eon- ‘tained more venom anc abuse than all shevoncentrates ve- nom and abuse of every whig and Know Nothing eper, for the last two years, while Charley Irving was on the spot to add those verbal muledictions whish can only fall in fall force and effect from the “Bayard” himself, The Ec- aminer article denounced the proceeding of the parson as “unprecedented, unre) ogee and anti-demrcratic precipitancy, and altogether without excuse or prece dent.’ and declares it never witnessed a more unblushing ‘violation of democratic principle; and in the name of the sovereign people of Virginia, it protests against, and pronounces their anathema maranatha against the vi- cioua example. Warming with the subject, Hughes de- nounces it as.an anotnaly, an outrage, a fraud, an inde- Ceney, and a degradation of Virginia ‘to the meniat office of maa service; asa trick, an intri fue, ® point blank un- truth; a Presijent making trick, Xc., &c.; but says he courts the outrage, and defies tenn, “to do their worst. erie have no desire,” he says, © that the election shall tponed. We profer tbat the contrivers of the fraud pe fe it this enormous outrage upon the democratic sentinvent of the State. Let them burn their incense on the altars of man service to their souls’ conteat. They are joined to their idols—let them alone, Let them pour out on -morro# all the pent up bathos with which they are in labor, and disgorge all the saliva of fulsome paneer ‘with which their mouths are overflowing. them to push their impertinences to the utmost point of the patience and forbearance of the democrauc masses.’ But pechaps the most inetractive part of Hughe: cle is res portion quoted below. It es long been kaown that when the pany wish to defeat any candidate of the whig or American party, they raise the cry of abolition! abolition! It now appears tnat in like manner—when wauté by the hobgoblin ery of ‘‘crisis.” Upon every oc- casio whea those whose lackeys they are require a new lease of ‘and place, they put their little teapots of crisis on the fire, get up in them a raging tempest, and on about the troubles of their own concocting, as if « Gooa :vius or Chimborszo was avout to embowel the hu- boy in the fable did not cry “Wolf” moe frequently or frivolously than these crisis makers raiced that hello-belloo whenever it was neces- is no crisis upon us @ hundred men in Virginia ere not ax com- to meet as Mr. Mason; the pretence of ve fitness in him, is mo more por less than Mt upon every other talented man in the democratic party Ad ae they #e@ § real crisis is not pelitical personal and the fright of these crisis makers at ae oan bulity of Opposition to their Mr. Nonesuch is as ridiculous asthe retence of a political crisis is groundless and «pectous. Fe eee eugth bas this ‘ery of crisis been carried, that ‘the party has become like « oe] of sheep much worried of sad atthe of the smallest and . gone may be ir. Mason is in, su a others take eT ag with the corn—that parti- ular pig, is the one who feels that there ts a crisis.’ ’” But the savage article of the Lzaminer was, so far, a8 Gay efizet on the lagiatative action om Saturday was con orened, of ae avail. The Juntoites winced like Q@ullcd jades, yet stood, democratic feahion, as firm as it bad much taduence, however, (a cuecking the NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1855. flow of ‘bathos."” Nor was the polish of Mr. Mason's doota much ‘mpaired by the saliva of fulsome pane- eric. Three gentlemen ‘aly offered Incense. They'each {nformed the house that Mr. Mason was a Virginian—that a Virginia neart, Virgims principles, and Vir ginia feelings. Hach one then went on to inform the we and the whole world that they each were Vir tnginis hearts, Virginia principles and Vir- Viegials should st one time have four such men as Mr, Brannon, Mr. Spitier, Mr. Hitmen eartn, Virgiols ioe prieepiae od Virgina feelings res ir and Vu feelings, inst of being red otitioutate, 4s one would naturally suppose, is certainly a most remarkable and wonderful coincidence. The ‘hula bello” of crisis was als> sprung ith much success as at only to carry, nearly every democratic member for Mason, but a couple of good Tay lor whigs also. Considerable allowance is, however, made for the latter, on the score of youth and inexpe- rience—verdant politicians being much more liable to be entrapped by the wary democrats than voterans at the game Tunderstand that the innocents have been. placed under the protection of the Greenhorn Guard, with a view to their protection against the insidious artifizes of the democracy until they shall be older and wiser grown. ULC, eee FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Satcrpay, Dev. 22—6 P. M. Quotations for stocks to-day show a further decline, Nearly every stock on the list fell off this morning, some considerably. Illinois Central bonds receded 14 per cent; Canton Company, 3¢; Cumberland, 14; New York Central Railroad, 34; Erie, 1; Reading Railroad, %; Michigan Southern, 34; Hudson River Railroad, 14; Cleveland and Toledo, 34; Chicago and Rock Island, 134. Nicaragus Transit advanced 34 per cent; Ilinois Central Railroad, 34; Galena and Chicago, %. After the board Nicaragas Transit was in demand, and 18 a 1834 per cent were of- fered, buyer sixty, and no sellers, The stock was scarce, ‘and parties were in the market as borrowers. The move- ment in Erie was active to-day, but it was on the down- ward tack. Michigan Central so'd to-day in small lots, but it is so weak that we should not be surprised to sea any day a serious depreciation in market value. Chicago and Rock Island appears to be gradually settling down. This never was an active speculative stock, and the daily sales have only been to a moderate extent; but it is a sound, substantial ten per cent stock. New York Cen- tral pays but eight per cent, and hardly earns that, not- withstanding which it is selling six per cent higher than Rock Island, The Central is an old inflated concern, with gradually receding dividends, while the Rock Inland is @ young, new company, actually earning sixteen per cent and upwards, but declariog only ten, reserving a large surplus. The former is selling at 92, and the latter at 86 percent. These facts are certainly worth the con- sideration of small stockholders in the New York Central road. They can save in the purchase of the Caicago and Rock Island at least six per cent at the present cost, and get a stock paying two percent more, with the future full of favorable results. The rise in Illinois Central is caused by the extent of foreign orders, Galena and Chi- cago advazced latgely on the sale of a few small lots. This is really a wonderful stock. Ic is such a snug, com- pact, productive concern, that trustees of estates, and the reserve funds of publie and private institutions, find safe Investments ini‘. It has no foreign entanglements—no outside alliances; it makes no loan of credit, and guaran- tees no dividends in other railroad companies; it is not, in fact, mixed up with any connections in any shape, and that is more-than avy railroad company in this, ana several in some other States, can say or show. It has as much business us it can doc nnfortably, and has not been compelled to buy any by loaning bonds. So cng as the Galena and Chicago Railrvad Company confines its opera- tions to legitimate lines, we shall uphold its management and endorse its stock as an investment, and no longer. We believe it to be at present the best security in the narket—safety and productiveness equally considered— and it would be well tor thoe who are opposed to all speculative stocks, who will be in the receipt of divi- dends cr other cecurities on or about the Ist of Janu- ary, to turn their attention to Galena and Chicago, and thoroughly post themselves up regarding its merits. We feel confident they would agree with us perfectly in their conclusions. At the second beard the market was better. Erie advanced 3; per cent; Nicaragua Transit, 114; Reading Railroad, %. The activity and rapid rise in Nicaragua took the street by surprise this afternoon, and some- what astonished the shorts, A few days will place this stock at prices compsring more favorably with its actual value, Some important changes are about being made ‘n the interval administration of its affairs.
