Sunday, Nov. 11-6 P, mm. ‘There bas been, during the past week, more activity in the steck market than we have noticed for some time part, and at the close prices were a little botter. It ie, however, nothing but one of those flurries pre- ceding the dissolution of some of the fancy stook com- panies, The bulla are carrying bodily most of these stocks, and they may, from time to time, galvanize the market and inflate prices a fraction, bat every struggle will be weaker and weaker, until they finally cease al- together. The unprecedented supply of money in the market, seeking investm: enables «peculators to got hold of enough to hold large amounts of fancy stools; even the banks make large loans on such worthless trash, but they require such wide margin to guerd sgainet depreciation, that @ great many shares have to be hypothecated to raise compara- tively a moderate sum of money, The quantity of this stuff upon the market, however, is 60 enormous that the bulls find no difficulty in raising all the loans they went. T! undanes of money in cir- culation sustains prices for stocks generally. and gives outside holders an opportunity to realize, which may not bappen again for yenre; and if they do not avail themrelves of it, the fault is theirs alon | ‘The amount of United States stock issued to foreign- | ers, from the 3d to the Sth inst , is $69 500, as follows: Lean of 1842, $500; of 1846, $50,000; 1847, $17,000, and 1848, $22000. ‘These issues are made by the funding of ‘Treasury notes. ‘We publish in another column an article from the Monitor Republicano, of Mexico, an interesting account of the Mexican debt. It appears by this that the Mexi- can government is doing everything in its power to meet the payments of interest; but, thus far wery little progress has been made. According to this state- ment, the debt of Mexico amounts to about $56,000,000, of which the government has actually received bas about one quarter. Of one obligation, amounting to $22,000,000, the government received only $11 000,000 ‘The debt has been largely increased by the non pay- ment of interest. It will be seem by this, that the Mexican government has been pretty deeply involved 4D dett; but if the bondholders get one fourth of their claims, they will get all they bave ever advanced. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the quotations for the priueipel speculative stocks in this market, for each dey of the past week, aud at the close of the week previous. A few weeks will settle all these things mere dednitely; but in the meantime speculators will get the steam up so high that there will be great Genger cf acollepse. There is very little more pews from Europe of any particular interest to thix country, The prospect of amy extensive demand for our bread- stuffs wes rether poor, and we cennot salculate upon any improvement to an extent ecient to intiace prices in this country. It fs necessary for = large consumption of cotten in Great Britain, that food should ecentiuue cheap, We have euch @ large surpine of breadetute, and the crops in England and on the Continent have proved so abundant. that there f9 very little probability ef provisions of any kind being high. This a strong argument in favor of high prices for cotton, and full ewployment for the manufacturing clackes of Europe, The vettiement of the political dif. fleulties on the Contiment, which threatened at one time to involve ali the great powers fa due genaral war, have been amicably arranged forthe present aad this fs fn favor of a larger consumption of ostfon than usval. There are, therefore, many reasons for autiot- pating an extensive demand for the raw material, and of course w permanent improvement in prices, and bat one that et thie moment occurs to us. In favorof lower prices and @ more limited consumption, Quotations for conscls had advanced considerably according to the |. the reenit doubtless of favorable news Money continued easy in London, wud the rate of interest ruled at the lowest potnte, The cheapness of money gave speculators in oatton grant fecilities for purchasing and holding; and in the event of the mavement becoming established on « sound basis, the epinners of Furope will ha: prices for the raw material, to keep thelr machinery in operation ‘The tuteligence from California is interesting, but Dy wo means so favorable as generally anticipated. ‘The Orecen, at Panama, from San Fraucises, brought down about $409.00 on freight, and the passencers have abort two hundred thourand dollars ia their trunks. from the gold mines of California, Our aavions from fan Francisco are to the Ist of October. The digeing season at that time was nearly over, and the miners were flocking into Sam Franciseo in large numbers, on their way to the Atlantic ports. We learn thet ers for Fanama, which are to leave California the next four months, have been already filled up. that tickets command large preminm. [t appears by this that there is as mach apxiety to get wway from a3 to get to San Francisce, The miners have wot made out 40 well this reason as they did Inst, or as they expected. It is estimated that about 100,000 have been in the wines this season, and (hat the average prodact of gold dust bas not been more then four dollars per head, ‘This, iv the aggregate, will make @ very large but it makes the cost of Production so great that the business will not prove ne profitable as antivipated: It is the opinion of thore who have just returned from the mines, that the harvest has been gathered, and that after this year the prodnetion will be limited — that the cort of working the mineg will be #0 near the market velne of the metal, Hmited number will be engaged in the mining basiness It is impossible to tell what will be the reeuit | of this enermous speculation, or how many will be ruined. Many have elready made moderate fortuner; but @ greater number have lost everything they bad in the shape of money and health. Of a fleet of between six and seven hundred vessels which bave left the Atlantic porte of thie country, only abont three hundred bad arrived at San Framcisco at the Intest date, and, an yet, not one of the vast number bas returned. There is an tmmense eapital locked up in this fleet of merchantmen, whioh i#at present, and is likely to be for # long time, useless and inactive, ‘This will entail heavy losses upon the owners; but in the event of any disaster overtaking the shipping tu the harbor of San Francisco, ia the shape of fire, it will benkrupt hundreds who bave invested their whole capt tal in the enterprise, Prices for property of all kinds in California, execpt real estate, wore rapidly deareci« ating. and very few articles were bringing enough to pay charger, to say nothing ebsut ost.
