QUITS JUDGESHIP ~ T0 RAISE CATTLE 1. s B i o Oiabons it Miami, Okla., Jan. 25 UP—One of the finest Aberdeen-Angus herds in the United States is the pride of Okishoma today because a Hoy's in- terest in cattle became a0 ‘“con- tagieus” that his father was lured from the bench of the district court to raise purebred livestock. The father, 8. C. Fullerton, retired recently from the presidency of the American Aberdeen-Angus Breeders association after holding the office for four years. He was district judge at Miami, Okla.. in 1919 when his son, Sam, then in his early ’teens, joined a 4-H calf club. Sam, Interested in the activities on his father's farm a mile east of town, acquired a purehred Aber- deeu-Angus heifer. Her first male calf becsme the foundation of the famous Fullerton herd of “black beauties.” At the peak of the cattle market | after the world war. the boy per- suaded Judge Fuilerton to buy 18 purebred Angus at a price in excess of $11,000. Cattle prices started down the steep toboggan a few| weeks later, and the 1S head which | Fullerton and his son had purchased would not bring 15 cents on the dollar paid for them. But, the judge stood by his boy. amd to equalize the investment he bought 100 good breeding cows for less than $100 each. The herd be- gan to build up and attract atten- tion. ts owner left the bench in 1923 and practically retired from the law profession to devote his time and talents to farming and raising livestock. The next year he was elected president of the American Aberdeen-Angus Breeders associa- tion. Tts owner left the bench in federation honored him with its presidency. ‘The Fullerton herd has accumu- | lated many championships and blue ribbons at stafe fairs and natienal livestock shows. Playman of Sun- beam, international grand champion | byll, was produced on the Fullerton | {tasm. This animal has won 59 rib- bogs. Estelle 11, a Tullerton cow, ‘Bas wen 42 ribbons. Barber Makes Violins Called “Tone Perfect” Chicago, Jan. 25 ® — A crippled | barber, Chicago musicians believe, has rediscovered the secret of mak- ing perfect violins by hand. Vernon 1. Schwenk made nearly 100 vielins and cellos in his spare time as a barber. One of his in- strumgents now is used regularly in | the first violin section of the Chi- cago Bymphony orchestra. Another, made from pine fllled with knots, was pronounced “tene perfect” by Frederick Stock, director of the or- chestra. Demand for his violins became so great that Behwenk deserted his ruzor and scissors to devote his full time to his mself-taught art. By working long hours each day he is able to produce one instrument a month. S8chwenk claims his perfect fin- struments result from harmonizing the three tone pitches. He creates | the proper “tone” in his wood by | adjusting its weight and thickness. Hard maple and spruce, he has found, are the most satisfactory ‘woods for violins. Y., Jan. 25 (P—Dis- covery that brilliant, metallic-color- ed ipsects owe their hues to the same principle that makes colors in soap bubbles has been made at Cornell university. The colors of a bubble are due to its extreme thinness. Films of some substances as thin and as transparent as soap hubbles, but of tough texture, have been found at Cornell to overlie the bodies of many insects, and to produce their sheen, Dr. Clyde W. fied the nature of these colors while working under an August Heckacher grant, found that the number of films varied, that they appear to be very firmly cemented together, and that swelling or pressure which changes the thickness of the film changes its color. Chronium Reflector For Auto Headlights Washington, Jan. 25 (#—Chrum- jum, which can be electroplated on steel and is more permanent than nickel, has been found particularly suitable for reflectors in automo- bile headlights after an exhaustive rescarch made by the bureau of standards. The research nndertaken to study the reflecting power of chromium, was extended to cover mnot only light in the visible portion of the apectrum but also the ultra-vielet and infra-red. As a result it was tound thatchromium has much higher reflecting power than pickel in the ultra-violet and, since it is lens affected by ultra-violet rays, it is more useful as a reflector of these rays.
