ONCE FOLLIES GIRL NOW A MOVIE STAR Chorines Are “Dumb” New York, Dec. 14—Seven years 2g0, Betty Meehan danced in a Fol. lies chorus. In odd hours, along With other “lajies of the ensemble,” she boosted her income by playing extra roles at a Long Island tilm fac. tory. The other day, Miss Elizabeth Meehan, who still could pass the meticulous muster of any music show producer, both for face and figure, came back to Manhattan with the prize scalps of scenario-land dangling from Ler sinuous waist. Only a few intimates had known that the Betty Meehan of the chorus was the Elizabeth Meehan whose hame could be found on such super. productions as “Beau Geste,” “8orre] and S6n” and “The Great Gatsby"; the same Elizabeth Meehan who had been selected to adapt to screen form the great Conrad epic, *The Reacue,” and whe now holds con. ferences with Faunie Hurst on the screen version of “Lummex."” In other words, Betty Meehan, of the chorus, has become one of the four or five! outstanding scenarists of the moment. Which is deing rather wel! for a choice and an extra girl. Miss Meehan, te the contrary, is quite astounded te find that anyone #hould consider her rise exceptional. Chorines Beautiful—Not Dumb “Oh yes, I know that cherines have the reputation of being beauti- ful but dumb,” she began. “And, perhaps, some of them are. But you'd be surprised at the girls you'll find in the choruses. “There were six in the group to which I was attached, and every! one of them, at this moment is a &uccess in one way or another. Some married rich men and some married prominent juen; some were from ®ood familics and inherited money; some becpnie stars of the cinema and the stage, The fact is that the 5o-called ladies of the ensemble are wise, even when |narticulate—they have to be. Hundreds of them drift into the chorus by accident rather than inteat. It's a stepping stone for them to something else and on the watch for the big instance, Lillis Dove—wli0se {dentity needs no establishment: there was Alta King, whe married Edward Royce, the playwright and predycer; there was Gladys Bowie, who now hasa fortune in her name and fig- has a fortune in her name and fig- Janet Magrue, who became a ster of the London stage; and there was Fmily Fraings, who married Lynn Overman, celebrated actor-writer. “My own experience convinces me that one hes te ‘make the breaks, te some extent. Y had been a pro- fessional swimmer. I eame from Philadelphia and my first business experience was a professional awim. ming meet, Modelod, Danced, Wrote “When I came to New York, I found that it was easy to get & job medeling for clothing concerns if Yoy had a figure. It was then but s step to the chorus. But I had al. ways wanted to write. Even then, 1 wrote articles for Sunday news. papers, but coyldn’t make a living at it. Most of the Follies girl had no trouble getting work as ef!ru in the pictures, “One day, as I was waiting te go on as an extra, the script ot a scen- ario was handed me to read. I was interested 1in its composition and found myself studying the mechan- ice. When T asked for a chance to help on the writing of a script they raised their eyebrows, The 1dea— an extra girl wanting to write a scenario! But I worked on the story of “The Great Gatsby” and things were different after that. *‘On the strength of that story and *“Beau Geste,” they sent me to Holly- wood. And I've been going ever since.” “DIAN SQUAD” PAYS Washington, Dec. 14. (#—The “Diamond squad” of the New York customs service, created by congress last year at & cost of $103,000, is “confidently” expected by Director Camp of the customs bureau, to “give t government a millien dollars the first year.”" FREED FROM THE MEDIGINE HABIT Kellogg’s ALL-BRAN brought welcome relief —_— Sufferers from constipation will interested in Mrs. Van Horn's loflfir bel'.w She hwmh us, vogl:- tarily, to express her a| Yruu for the wonderful m!n ts ALL- BRAN brought.
