Nov. 30.—The litte-known Rio de Oro or “River of Gold™ region of Spanish Africa, ‘where neither rivers nor gold exist, “was brought into the news limelight recently by the ‘capture and subse- quent release of two French air- mail pilots by tribesmen of that dis- triet. According to a bulletin of the Washington, D. C. headquarters of the National Geographic Soclety, Dio de Oro consists of four hundred miles of sandy waste along the northwestern coast of Africa be- tween Capes Bojador and Blanco. It lies directly southwest of Morocco and s the westernmost part of the _Bahara Desert. i Rio de Oro Is Misnomer | “The misnomer, ‘River of Gold’ was received from Portuguese dis- coverera in 1442, the bulletin con- tinues. “The Portuguese mistook a long indentation on the coast for the estuary of a river, and, obtain- ing some gold dust from the natives, immediately called it Rio d' Ouro,’ or ‘River of Gold' They believed they had found the mythical ‘Pac- telus; supposed to be a branch of the Nile river in that part of the continent. After its discovery old mays traced a river on a straight line from Rio de Oro across the Sahara to its confluence with the Nile, somewhere in Nubia. Thus a river was made to flow whe no river existed. The Portuguese 'Rio 4’ Ousto ,was changed to Rio de Oro ‘when the Spanish took possession of the territory in 1885. “Most of Rio de Oro is a sterile and rocky plateau about 1,000 feet Righ. Near the coast is grown es- parto grass, of which paper, cord- age and baskets are made. Further inland are oases. Nomad Berbers and negroes eke a sparse living by raising cattle, sheep and camels. Tts climate is dry but not unhealth- ful, although summer days in Rio de Oro not infrequently reach 120 degrees, Little known and little visited, it is still a land of mystery t0 the casual student of geography. Fishertes of Commercial Importance “The only Epanish colony in the territory is at Villa Cisneros. Here are the headquarters of the fishing industry, Rio de Oro's sole claim to commercial importance. Oft its eoast are found aslimsah, which welgh from 30 to 80 pounds each, tupny and other large and valuablc fish. Cod are found in great num bers although they do not compare in size and flavor with the cod o! New Foundland and the North Sea *“The fisheries are largely in the hands of Spanish and French fisher. men from the Canary Islands, which Ue northwest of Rio de Oro. X ‘The balance due this country June 30, 1926, was $233,141,247.42 and this sum has been 'reduced by - subsequent payments to $210,682,- 175.45. i ‘ The Army bank maintained for the receipts of soldiers’ - deposits contained $2,021,900.43 on June 30, 1928, and the average deposit amounted to $253. Carmichael said his department was_handicapped by a shortage of officers and that it had been nev- espary to assign officers from other branches of the service to finance duties.
